So what do u think of this?

My boyfriend’s uncle is a personal trainer in Miami and he is currently putting together a book. It’s basically a health-oriented book about fitness and eating right. It’s like an exercise book combined with a cook book. He has created a whole bunch of recipes that are healthy, yada yada. He has a book agent in L.A. who has seen it and is going to publish it. It’s pretty much going to happen soon.

Well it just so happens that my boyfriend is pretty much writing the book for his uncle. I mean yea, it’s his uncle’s idea and his recipes, but Craig (bf) wrote the introduction, and he wrote this whole biography about his uncle for the book. He is even writing all these little excerpts that go next to the pictures of his uncle doing the exercises and next to the recipes. And it’s not his uncle’s words, it’s Craig’s work.

Craig thinks that his uncle is not going to hook him up with anything once his book gets published. He has joked about it and he said his uncle kind of had an air about him like, “Well it’s MY book” and he tries to pass it off as like it's good practice for Craig...like he’s doing him a favor or something. I mean I’m sure his uncle will give him SOMETHING, but if this book is a huge hit, which we think it will be since everyone is all about yoga and being healthy now, he could make a load of money from this and I’m guessing his uncle will give him like $1,000 in a card or some , which is NOTHING compared to what his uncle will make probably you know?

He lives at his uncle’s house now too because he started grad school last month and his lease was up the month before that for his apt. which was in north Miami, but his school is in south Miami (where his uncle’s house is) so his uncle said he can live there until he finds another apt. and is comfortable financially to move again. But he charges him $500 rent! It’s like dude, that’s your family and you’re going to sit there and make money off your nephew who is struggling through grad school and living off student loans and a couple of side jobs? I think that’s bull. So anyway, that’s even MORE of a reason why Craig shouldn’t feel obligated to work on this book for nothing.

Anyway, he is not confrontational at all and he definitely won’t sit down with his uncle and tell him that he is expecting to get a piece of the pie, just because he can already sense that his uncle will resent it.

So I spoke to my boss about the whole situation and he told me to tell Craig to copyright his work. That way, if the book gets published and his uncle is a dick and won’t hook him up, Craig can take him to court and it could be a big ugly mess. Well I told that to Craig and he was all about it. But then last night, he was second guessing himself and thinking that maybe his uncle is right, and that it is HIS book, bla bla bla. I explained to him that he is the one who is sitting at his computer and writing the ing thing every day when he clearly has other things to do like school n stuff. He is totally making a sacrifice and really helping his uncle put this entire thing together. I mean I slept over there last weekend and at like 10 in the morning, I heard a noise and his uncle slipped a CD under the door and it was the book and he wanted him to work on it. So Craig woke up and started like messing around with it while his uncle just stood behind him dictating what to do…his uncle isn’t very computer savvy at all, so he doesn’t do jack !

So what do you guys think? You think he should copyright his stuff? I mean that's really shady, but he will not go to his uncle at all, I know he won't. He is getting resentful and he never speaks up about stuff like this...

actually writing a book doesn't mean . If he is putting his own ideas into the book and stuff then maybe he'd have a case, or would wanna get co-author. At least in my field, when you publish a book, you must contribute significantly to the ideas, not physically write it. kinda sucks, and a lotta people don't get credit/compensation, but its the way it is.

And it is great experience, not many people actually write a book. Let his uncle ride the wave, then come out with his own book.

thats mah take.

well hey, i have a great idea for a clothing line, but i'll just get my mom and sister to make all the calls and get the company going, and place all the orders from the wholesalers and get the website up too while i just observe and make sure everything goes how i want it to:wtf:

i don't think his uncle has sat down in front of the computer once to "write his book".

thats the problem working with relatives. oh jamie i don't think he wants to sue his uncle plz don't encourage him to break up his family. What he should do really depends on what he wants to get out of it. If its a family favor then some cash should be fine. He should at least get the proper credit like ghost writer so if the book is a success, he can use it in his portfolio. Although with the number of health-diet-workout books on the market I wouldn't expect it to do much.

Usually ghostwriters are paid up front. Otherwise he could demand a salary based hourly or per word writen. But, unless they agree otherwise, Craig won't be entitled to a sales percentage.

to be honest his book probably won't make much money to begin with unless he's the next Dr. Atkins...seriously.

My dads father says he gave HG Wells the idea of War of the worlds.

well i'm not going to give away the title of the book or anything, but trust me, it's a really catchy phrase and i can totally see his uncle being the next big icon in health & fitness. like another south beach diet craze.

also, just for the record...i know that it came off like that in my original post, but trust me, i do not think he should make war with his family. yea, i think it's messed up, but i have been trying to encourage him to talk to his uncle, rather than go behind his back and do this...but he doesn't want to.
