In one sentence or less:

minimal - smooth chillout, almost ambient but not quite as boring as elevator music

techno - very hard with obviously synthetic/computerized sounds (ex. Carl Cox)

trance - heavily focused on the melody and higher frequencies; high potential for "cheese" in this genre ;) (ex. Ferry Corsten)

house - upbeat funky rythms with drums and beats (ex. Desyn Masiello)

progressive house - smoother chilled out house with a bit less "funk" and more of an emphasis on the smooth grooves than anything else. (ex. Sander Kleinenberg)

I don't know what I'm talking about. Pay no attention to me whatsoever. And don't flame me for crappy definitions/examples.

armin = trance+prog trance
van dyk = trance as far as i know...
shultz = "modern" progressive trance which is essentially what armin plays too and in all sense is crap IMO

van dyk has turned that way too it seems with politics of dancing 2
