Which uses the least CPU power?

At the moment im running Reason 2.5 with Sonar 2 XL on a 1.4Ghz Athlon. After adding a few effects, the CPU meter is on "WARNING" and it becomes difficult to monitor what im mixing.

Im looking for something to replace my copy of sonar and that also hopefully use less CPU power or that can manage a high CPU level well, without stuttering and 'droping out' all the time. so what should i use? What would you say is the best to use on a slower computer?

If I understand correctly, you're using Reason as a ReWire client?

Perhaps Cubase SX? I'm not sure whether FL Studio is 'lighter' than Cubase so I'd perhaps go for that one... Not sure about Ableton Live and other though.

No sequencer can help you if you're running out of CPU. Cubase is probably the most efficient and lets you freeze VST instruments; Ableton is decent, Fruityloops is the least efficient.

I don't think any of that is going to make a difference for you though. If you're maxing out your CPU with very few instruments/effects then it may be your sound card/ASIO drivers that are the problem. The difference between sequencers isn't trivial, but it's not huge either - there's simply no substitute for good, properly-configured hardware and drivers.

DigiNut's right about the sequencer having nothing to do with your CPU usage. Other than changing your soundcard and getting a better computer, all I can suggest is making quick renders of various parts that you want to listen to, and making fixes according to what the render sounds like. It's slow and inefficient, but it gets the job done.
