| Don't get me wrong, it's a good thing that more didn't die, but the fact that a cause of death with a toll this low was even MENTIONED is LAUGHABLE. Why? With 5,000,000 people in the GTA, the odds of dying of SARS that year were were 1 in 125,000. With odds this low, you were TWELVE times more likely to KILL yourself that year! The moral? People need to stay the hell away from the news! I've stopped watching the news or reading newspapers 2 years ago and have never been happier. People have to realize that the media is conditioning them for negativity, because bad news sells. How can you possibly feel good after spending a half-hour immersed into reading about people getting shot, run over, burnt, robbed, raped, left homeless, blinded, abandoned, sued, divorced, assassinated, etc. STOP WASTING YOUR DAMN TIME WATCHING, READING, THINKING AND TALKING ABOUT POINTLESS . Speaking of which... *turns off PC* |

I agree that it is strange to see such a big fuss made over SARS when only 40 people died, but maybe the fact that they made such a big deal is what contained SARS.
I work in a hospital and I was there durring SARS...The percausions that the hospitals took durring this time was amazing. No one was allowed in the hospital unless it was very importants. The people that were being let in were screened by taking their tempature and asking a few simple questions.
All staff were required to wear masks and gowns at all times when interacting with anyone. Also all staff was screaned going into work everyday.
I would like to remind everyone that the healthcare workers of Toronto are a huge part of why SARS didn't become wide spread. Just because SARS was contained doesn't mean that is is not dangerous. |

| SARS trained our public health officials for future pandemics. With an ever increasing world population a hard hitting virus could have huge ramifications. The fact that they made a big deal about is a very good thing, if they did not more people could have died. Even if the odds were slim, still anyone could of contracted the virus. It's like the lottery, the chances are slim, but somebody always wins right? |

CNN is going nuts with this newest outbreak. The media just loves to overdo it to scare you into watching more.
Im sick of sensationalism and what it does to society. |

It's nothing new, From the 1950's to the late 1980s it was all about the Cold War and being afraid of the Communists. Now we're afraid of Terrorists and hurricanes. Let's face it fear sells news, products -- it drives economy. |

no seriously. The WHO is the stupidest organization ever concieved. Attaching the label of 'unsafe to travel' to cities in the world because of a disease, which is rare within the general population and only really can seriously effect the very old or very young is rediculous. Not only that, but because they have the label of 'world' attached to them, they automatically have credibility in the media, who loves to sensationalize these things. SARS was a great indicator of how unprepared the world is for a major outbreak, and did a lot to fix that, but it also showed how stupid the media, and consequently the public can be when it comes to things which they don't truly understand.
And yeah, the current health problems our city is now facing is equally as rediculous. For all we know the nursing home could have served undercooked food and the people eating it were too frail to recover. OLD PEOPLE DIE. THIS IS NOT NEWS CNN, IT IS A BIOLOGICAL FACT. |
