Knew I forgot something. Yeah, the knee too. I haven't seen any compressor without does :S I wonder why you are having such a bad time. What does the knee do anyways? is it the slope around the ratio or something?
Classical Compressor is free and it's alright. It got Knee, Gain, Ratio, Treshhold, attack, and release. For all I know, that's the only settings there are to any compressor. I'm not a total n00b, but I'm not pro either, so there might be more settings on some. Well, I'll see if I find a link... Here:

kjaerhus audio got a nice collection overall really, you should check it out:

Kjearhus is a norwegian (or maybe danish) name btw...
But with my usual luck, you already tried that one ;D |

depends on what you want out of it. some compressors are really transparant. some colour the sound to varying degrees. you may or may not like that colouration.
for a transparant compressor, voxengo crunchessor is really really good. i hardly ever use fruity compressor now when i can use this instead. it just sounds noticeably cleaner and doesnt cause loads of colouration even when you brick it.
for a compressor that colours sound loads try something like blockfish. i think its freeware. some people like some degree of colouration and it can sometimes add character to a sound. but im just going through a phase where cleanliness is next to godliness. when i get back into dirty music ill probably break out blockfish again at some point. |

omg yes. It's so colorful and warm. It's easily my choice of preference for strings.
Didn't realise it was a compressor though :S |
