Get an Ibanez they are excellent to learn on and are proffesional quality, Korn, In Flames, etc use them. Great sounds and quality.

do not teach yourself. no guitarist is good when he teaches himself, there'll be that you will NOT be able to know if you do it urself, such as dynamics, roots of chords, next notes, chord progression, etc :)

firstly, ibanez is a great choice, me thinks.
i own an ibanez grx20....yeah old, but fukin works like a charm.

id say you should spend a chillin amount on a guitar, like $300-$400 if you're a serious beginner....plus get a solid amp.........amp is important :)

effects pedals are fun as too.......:)

but you CAN be a good guitarist if you are self taught. I am pretty alright at it and have been playing for 5yrs self taught.

it's all about the passion bro.....if you got it.....you got it.

you started that post like you were about to argue with me lol

dude, i don't doubt self-taught guitarists or bassists or drummers or whatever. BUT no matter how could you got from reading tabs and/or online lessons, sitting down with a pro or teacher is 12323x better.

i think 300 bucks on an ibanez is money well spent. about 100-150 on maybe a 50-100 watt combo amp is also great...pedals could come later. I think a Line 6 combo pedal would be ideal.

I had a Marshall Rocket Special and a 15" Marshall amp. It was nice, and only ran me $300 on sale as a package deal. Sold them when I left for college.

I agree. You can be a very good guitarrist by teaching yourself, but teachers will give you plenty of tips, etc. It also all depends what style you play, if you want to play Led Zepp, Deep Purple, Floyd, etc, it's pretty simple compared to Dream Theater, Satch, Vai and all those other crazy guys. The advanced stuff is hard to learn by yourself...unless you're some crazy genius :p

I have been playing guitar for about 8 years. I agree with Omega_Blue as far as getting a Squier Strat to start off. They're cheap and they are great for learning. I had an Epiphone Strat copy and it was pretty much the same thing as the Squier Strat. The guitar may go out of tune every now and then and it might not sound as great as a real Strat but you will be able to decide if you want to stick with it without blowing a lot of money on a really expensive guitar.

I wouldn't recommend an Ibanez because most of the artists that you listen to are more blues oriented, and I always thought Fender and Gibson guitars suited blues more so than an Ibanez guitar. When I think of Ibanez I think of metal, and that's not really the sound that you are after.

If you do decide to stick with playing the guitar, I suggest saving up for a really good guitar. And if you still don't want to spend too much, you can do what I did and get a used guitar in good condition. I have a 50s Telecaster that retails for about $700-800 but I was able to get it for $500 used and I love it.

As far as lessons go, I say take them. You will learn a lot quicker than if you teach yourself. Plus you get rid of bad habits quickly when someone is there to help you learn.
