cartridges question

hi, i have a ortofon concorde cart(black) w/ nightclub stylus. when im doin some light scratching, my records start to skip. sometimes it goes back and sometimes forward, it doesn skip alot, just skips a few beats. but i would like to eliminate this problem, i was thinkin of buying some ortofon scratch carts, but that'll be expensive, so i was thinkin for scratch stylus. will these orotofon scratch stylus fit on to my concorde cart? will the stylus have better tracking? if not how can i get getter tracking?
i have another question, some of the vinyls i got seem "slippery." like when i put the needle on and press start, it takes an unusual time for the record to get to speed. why does it do this? how can i get rid of this? i have some esdjco 1200 slipmats if they make a difference.
thanks for reading. sorry so long.gary

All Ortofon styli will fit onto all Ortofon cartridges, even OM cartridges (obviously I'm talking about styli and cartridges for DJ use - their audiophile styli won't fit). So yes you could get the Scratch styli.

However, this probably won't have a great deal of effect, if any at all. The nightclub styli (the elliptical version, anyway) are some of the best tracking stlyi you can get. Try adding a little bit more weight on the tonearm. Ortofons are rated for between 2g and 4g, so if you are skipping at say 3g try putting it up to 3.5g.

In answer to your other problem, I'm certain you will find that the records that slip more are warped into a dome shape. This means that when playing one side, it's only the label (and a little bit of the vinyl) that's actually touching the slipmat, making it very slippery. If you turn the record over, you'll find that it doesn't do this.

To get round this, you need to try and flatten the record out. Put some heavy books on it or leave it underneath your record box for about one or two weeks and this should get rid of it. Also, try keeping all your records in a tightly packed box or bag and this should prevent any of them from getting out of shape.

Is there anything you don't know :p
Hey just add some weight dude, or if it is warped try to flatten it, or get a new copy if it is warped bad.

Of course not! ;):D

Another thing to do when scratching to prevent skipping is to turn off the anti-skate. The anti-skate creates a force towards the outside of the record to counteract the force the stylus is experiencing when the record is playing forwards. This stops the record skipping.
When you play the record backwards (i.e. during scratching etc.) the force on the stylus is towards the outside of the record, so the anti-skate will just add to this and make it even more likely that the record will skip. You'll notice that when scratching the record always jumps backwards rather than forwards (i.e. towards the outside of the record). Just turn the anti-skate to zero before you start scratching and then turn it back on when you've finished.

I have always been looking forward to receiving my Ortofon pro cartidges as i'm just using what came with my set which was stanton AL 500. When trying it on, however, i find it skipping and jumping rediculously on my records.. and even though i've tried to set the heights of the tone arm at the highest level and the weights as heavy as possible it still jumps on a couple of my record a bit (and those records ain't warped too!). So i had no choice but to put back the old cartridges on... which works perfectly... any idea? I really don't want to put the weight on my tone arm that much too coz i don't wany the stylus diggin in to my preciuos vinyls.. =P
