Okay. It's not quite winter yet. But the temperature is steadily dropping and that usually means winter will be here sooner or later.
So, being the kind hearted soul (and don't wanna study) I, using my experience as survivor of many cold nights in middle of Butt, Nowhere, shall share my knowledge.
1. Dress accordingly. Don't be a dumb ass and think you're hardcore by going outside in your leather thong and wifebeater when it's cold. Dress for the weather.
2. Wind makes things feel more cold than it really is. Esp. during cold winter nights, cover all exposed skin. Frostbite is no fun.
3. Don't wear too much clothing. More you wear, more effort you'll spend dragging your arse around esp with clothing like giant parka. More importantly, you will overheat and suffer heat exhaustion if you move around or do heavy labour. So, when you expect to do something that requires a lot of physical exertion, stepping outside and being a bit cold is good, because your body will warm up once you do your stuff.
4. Drink water. Just because you're not hot, does not mean you don't have to drink. Avoid heat exhaustion. If you've sweated a lot, consider having some salt with your meal to replace the one you lost through sweat.
5. Wear loose layers. More restrictive your clothing is, less air pockets will be created between layers to keep cold air out.
6. Keep your clothing dry and clean. I don't think I have to explain this one.
7. You lose most of your heat through your head. Wear a toque or something similar to keep heat in. Scarf is another good item to have.
8. Fastest way to raise body temperature is a hot drink. Avoid drinking alcohol as it dehydrates you.
9. Fleece is your friend. I have yet discovered another piece of clothing that is as efficient as fleece.
10. Protect your feet.
That's it for now. Don't blame me for jinxing the weather.

All I need is a snowboard and I can make it through the cold months just fine.

| And Just because you drive an SUV doesn't mean you can still go 120 on snow covered roads. 4x4 gives you more grip but it doesn't help you stop. |

Great tips, but I thought this was going to be about mentally surviving the agony of winter...
1. Resume fun things to do inside - scrabble, decorating, movies, cooking, SEX
2. Cut down on the partying. Late nights, messed up sleep schedules and reduced exposure to daylight are a set up for S.A.D.
3. Keep exercising....endorphins are your friend!
4. Find outdoor activities that you enjoy...skating, sledding...try to get out and do something even if it is winter. the more you find there is to do outside, the easier winters become over the years. |
