| Poverty doesn't cause a crumbling economy. A crumbling economy causes poverty.. If you are trying to make the argument that drug use by a population doesn't contribute to poverty then you are not making a good argument. Exactly what economic theory are you basing this on? |

well lets see... 5.3 unemployment rate for holland... where pot and shrooms are legal
united states 5.5 unemployment rate..
dont blame drugs for the economy specially when u have no figures of the population who uses drugs... |

Ok, I just did. The percenage of the Dutch population that has ever used cannabis is around 16 %.( these are figures from 2001). The percentage of Jamaicans that have smoked pot is around 55-60%.( figures from 1998).
"Still, many others view it as a negative influence in a country that suffers from a moribund economy and growing violent crime.
Winston Mendes-Davidson, head of the Medical Association of Jamaica, called it "the single greatest detriment to the development of Jamaica."
Some 6,000 people -- out of a population of 2.6 million -- were detained last year on marijuana-related charges, including possession, selling and trafficking. Officials admit they fear a more serious crackdown will spark violent confrontations.
"During something like a football game ... we are not going to be searching for persons with ganja because that would involve an assault on the stadium," said A.J. Forbes, a police spokesman.
Indian indentured servants brought marijuana to Jamaica in the 19th century. Its use as a medicinal herb spread rapidly among plantation workers. Ganja tea was brewed to alleviate aches, and rum-soaked marijuana was rubbed on the body to cure coughs, colds and fevers.
"The harsh aspects of life -- the back-breaking work in the field for low wages and poor living conditions -- made it very attractive as a way to relax and escape," Crawford said." |

| Furthermore, a more socialist system like Holland will have skewed employment figures when compared to the US. |

dude before talkin about another country maybe u should watch and listen to whats goin on primarily in ur own, this country alone has a high rate of poverty, (look at what happened in new orleans) especially in those redneck states. Drugs have nothing to do with the fact that the country itself is suffering from a bad economy, and as some people mentioned about Holland, they dont seem to b having problems with the legalization of marijuana because of the fact that it is regulated. |

Those of you who are defending the guy...you mean to tell me there's absolutely no medicine for him other than pot? and how about the cannabis extracts used in medicine?
it is the law and you don't know the whole story outside of the Media. how do u know the guy wasn't selling it? i'm sorry for the guy i trully am, he served this country but he knew the law and he broke it.
what he should've done is try to get some type of license to grow it not go ahead and then try to justify it later.
Holland isn't a country, The Netherlands is a country. Anyway, their thing about weed and other drugs is the fact that early on they realized that a war on drugs cannot be won simply. However, when they first legalized it, it WAS a problem for them since alot of people were indeed smoking. At a much higher precentage than now. It subsided however. Jamaica however doesn't seem to do the same. Also, in "holland" it is very regulated, you cannot simply stand on a corner and sell, as i've seen with my own eyes a dude getting handcuffed this summer.
In Switzerland you can also smoke since they police turn their backs on it if you're somewhere where you won't bother anyone such as parks or something. |
