mid 90s and earlier. i think something should be of a totally different generation and sound in order for it to be "old school".

Therefore a least a decade.

I would say that when there is a definate change in the style of a particular genre of music then the old style is considered old school.

it could be different for each particular song.

when a song gets played and then gets overplayed and then stops being played and after a while is played again then it's old school.
