Segway chief to fight ruling
Other cities allow machines on their roads
The president of Segway of Ontario isn't about to let Toronto council flatten the tires of his business without a fight.
"We're one step away from being the first city in the world to ban Segways from sidewalks and roadways," said Robyn Reisler, president of Segway of Ontario.
At a city committee meeting this week, councillors upended the hope Reisler had of Segways being allowed on Toronto streets and sidewalks.
City lawyers said the "transporter" could be used only on roadways in city parks. Reisler was shocked.
Reisler estimates there are about 200 Segways in Toronto. Some are used in large warehouses, the Ontario Science Centre has one, and some seniors use them to get around instead of driving.
Councillor Cesar Palacio, one of four councillors to vote down the Segways at the committee meeting, said he's willing to examine allowing the two-wheeled vehicle on bike paths. He said he had little choice to vote against the Segways on city streets.
"The advice from our legal department was, 'Don't do it,' and I believe sidewalks are for people."
Councillor Bill Saundercook, who believes Segways should be allowed on the sidewalks, was surprised by the committee's refusal to allow their use to be debated at a full council meeting. |

I'm sure if this wasnt banned tho - you'd be the first in line to complain about those "damn segways" irritating pedestrians..
In my opinion, I think they should have the same laws as a bicycle. Use bicycle lanes and such. Sidewalks can be too congested during rush hour as it is. Theres always room for compromise! |

ive never had a problem with them. In fact when i first saw one i thought "what a nice comprimise between taking a car and walking. perhaps this will solve some of our traffic issues."
Perhaps council should rethink this idea. After all they are always the ones trying to force people out of their cars. |

| I think they are a great idea too. If they were to become more common, I'm sure they would cause pedestrians alot of frustration if they were forced to share sidewalks. I know I can get frustrated with those large transport trucks on the highway - this would be somewhat comparable. |

i don't get ppl who bike on the sideways, especially narrow ones
even when there are bike lines i see people on the sidewalks :-S
when I blade im on teh streets, and keeping up with traffic, i dont' see why people on bikes can't do it too |

| I think banning them is going to the extreme. All roadways should have a bicycle/segway lane and that would keep them off the sidewalks. They are a great idea...too bad some people don't think in the middle and only think at the ends. |

I agree that many areas don't have the room....however...this is something you work on over time....the majority of downtown toronto has enough room to create these areas...either by reducing lane width or reducing the size of sidewalks.
You can't just jump to the extremes without trying other alternatives. |

not only do they complain about the silliest things... but then they pass laws about them. Meanwhile how many billions has the government been caught stealing?
And we still want to re-elect them? |
