greetings, fellow spinners....

im a fairly new dj although I have finely honed all the essentials to be a successful performer... regarding mixing skill and what not, subsequentaly I finally feel it is time to properly mash up the clubs now, i just recently moved to Amsterdam from Ibiza, so its the perfect enviroment to start making cash off this whole thing... dont get me wrong though im really in it for the music (what a cliche!)

no but im serious I need some advice on proper marketing strategies and if any of the more experienced DJs want to put forward any suggestions I would be very grateful

I guess I will list the obvious things:

  • Make friends, meet people and get involved in the scene
  • Talk to promoters at parties and get to know them
  • Hand out lots of demo CDs!
  • Consider making a website if you don't have one already, and post some mixes up on the net.

Good luck :p

thanks for your advice, what do you reckon though...

should I bother with designing some CD covers for my demos or what?

in addition to this, how much should I be asking for as a firt timer in a specific venue. The place I got my eyes on is preety ballers,
m-fukaz in suits an stuff... I was there this night speaking to one of the key managers and to my surprise he mentioned the the words
īnot to much profitī but he said that this was an opportunity for something larger... what you think homies?

should I hit it up with the whole pack and then ask for cash upfront or just deal with it passively, its absolutely impertivate that I find out what I should do soon.... help us out mate

I would be very passive about money if you're just starting out. Pay your dues, develop as a club dj and the money will come. Personally, i think the best way to market yourself is to start throwing parties on your own...promote. Save some money, bring in a known dj to headline, and open for them. Getting your name out on the flyers is really important if you want to start to get recognized in your respective clubbing community. You have to give something to the local scene if you want to get something. Thats my experience here in NYC at least.

thats some solid advice right there, thanks a lot.

so should i make pre arrangements with certain venues or should I just freely hand out my demos in certain locations.... I mean, I want to have a thorough approach becuase there is this one club here in Amsterdam called Escape and its preety serious, i mean they got good Djs playing there and . So for those types of places should I hook up with the management via electro mail (some new huh?) or just turn up and distribute?

basically go to their website, and find out the appropriate contact info...their booking guys, and submit a solid, detailed proposal for your night. Keep it short and to the point, but obviously talk it up so it sounds good to them. You really have to have your together...its helps to have a bit of a resume for them to see that you have done something in the past though.
