| Well, this isn't looking quite as certain as it did 20 minutes ago. Apparently, my friend, who I was going to stay with at his school for free the whole time, has decided to move his ass back to Prague and leave school...so now I don't know what I'm going to do. I've still got the plane tickets, until I can figure it out, but damn, this sucks. |

watch out for Germany. They don't speak English too well (if you go off the tourist trap path) Still a nice place regardless . I went back in summer of 03 |
That's a change. When I was there from '87-'93, they spoke better English than most of the GIs, and I was crawling all over that country. Socialism is murdering their higher thought processes at an alarming rate. |

I've been to Germany twice, in 1999 & in 2003. The only German I speak is what I learned while I was there, & I got around fine. I travelled all over (Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Flensburg, Dresden, etc).
Don't expect people to speak English--learning a few German phrases & having patience & a good sense of humor will take you very far. I made a mental promise to avoid speaking English if at all all possible.
Have Fun!!! Berlin was very cool. |

Zimmer Frei--(Free Rooms). Many people rent rooms out--cheaper than a hotel.
Wo ist toilettes--(Where is the toilet?)
Mit Schlag--(With Whipped Cream)
Was Kostes dat? (how much does that cost)
The first night I was in Aachen, Germany back in 1999, I was determined not to speak any English. I went into a bar, & looked at a menu & stammeringly ordered "Baileys", for about 10 marks. I sat & sipped my baileys (this was a big deal to me as I still couldn't legally drink in the US). The bartender & other patron chattered away, before the guy turned to me & said "Are you American?" in English.
"Yes, how did you know?"
"We were discussing why you weren't talking to us, & decided you were retarded or an American, & thought you looked too pretty to be retarded." |
