DJ AtomX Invades Club 10 In Baltimore! My First Big Gig And My Review Of The Fiasco!

Ok.so a promoter ive known since my club Zei days(the first glow parties started there)has helped to open a new club in baltimore called 10 or "X".he really wants to bring a dc sound/feel to baltimore.now let me say., it took them 8 months past the original opening date to get this place open but it was worth it. This club is amazing inside. really the whole club is just first class all the way around.awesome light display and really nice sound system.quite franlky it so nice inside that it doesent fit in with baltimore clubs. this is like a new york /dc style. now , like most clubs in baltimore the theme here is a "to be scene" environment.and i will say every girl working there is hot and every girl i saw last night come in was attractive.even the busted/fat dudes were rich enough to wear expensive clothes and have thier hair straight.Think of it as a miniature Dream in the early days of its opening. Now the owners are quite happy with that theme but my friend bobby is not.He knows that that wont carry them forever and he wants to establish the music as more of a priority later down the road to keep customers coming back. The owners dont seem to understand this.If the "it" crowd keeps comin in then the music can be secondary right? Thankfully bobby knows better. So iv'e been giving him mix cd's everytime i see him just to keep my name on his mind for when this club opens. The owners arent sure about me.My sound isnt what baltimore people are used to. Bobby explains that there not trying to attract baltimore clubbers. What they want are the baltimore "residents" that go to DC because they cant find what they want in baltimore. even stealing away 2% of that crowd on the weekends is going to pack the place.Very hard to sell that idea to 3 different owners.

anyway.

so i go there on friday and bobby shows me around and like i said this place is hot. so we go up to the dj booth. some kid playing house music and right away he is very threatened by my presence. whatever.i see PVD- The Other Side sitting in his record bag."Thats a great record" i say (just trying to make conversation). The Martin Roth remix is excellent. "I dont know he shrugs, i only have it cause it was given to me". O.K. Then he says,"just like the commercial stuff huh?"
grrr.If this guy wasnt such a douche i would have felt guilty about taking his spot on saturday. You dont have to treat other dj's like garbage,ok? Especially in a club that just opened up.There going to try different people and things at first, just accept it and be friendly, then dj your butt off to win that spot from the other guy!

Originally i was just to come down and practice but it went went from a practice to a live performance! he called me before i even got there and said he needed me to go on that night! What they didnt know was that Trust was having some big event which took up a lot of their walk in traffic so it wasnt as huge of a crowd as they wanted and i would have liked an opportunity to post here and gets some recruits out there but there wasnt any time.

there was alot of hands in the cookie jar on this one. all of the owners were there and everyone had an idea of what should be played. it was explained to me that they wanted lots of vocals and remixed 80's songs(which is a signature of mine and what got me the gig) no problem.i had to play a long set so i decided to really mix it up and play some old school hits on top of the new stuff(its all new stuff to b-more people anyway, they dont usually know our kind of music:toothless )some highlights were.(with the AtomX H.O.U.S.E. treatment on some slower songs you might reconize:

Without You- Dogzilla
Tilt- 12(max graham remix)
Air For Life(mirco remix)
Intergalactic Planetary(matthew deekay remix)
Shivers(van burren)
Ibiza sky(mike shiver remix)
Do what you want- Jase from outa space(max graham remix)
Final cut(tom porcell)
View to a kill(sultan remix)
S.O.S. (van doorn remix)
Dark side of the moon(original)
I surrender (mr sam)
Flashdance(F*ck me im famous remix)
Fight for you right to party(junkie xl remix)
Legoland (i always said id play this out)
Love Comes again(mark norman remix)
Broken wings(hiver and hammer remix)
Listen to me mama(scot projet remix)
Dreamer- Alt F4
Sweet dreams(rob searle remix)
Way Out West Killa(orkidea remix)
Just F*ck- Tome Neville
Chace- Calm Down
Another Brick(remix of pink floyd)
Avalon Juliet(F*uck me im famous remix)
The other side(martin roth remix)
New stuff from arizona and super 8
How you Like Bass- Norman bass(classic!)
Yes- Owner of the lonely heart(max graham remix)

and more.

There were some issues that night. Firstly the moniter wasnt very loud so i had to go with judging my matching with my headphones and the speakers on the floor.(no one said it didnt sound ok and one guy who was a dj also said i didnt "trainwreck".:p he knew the lingo so i trusted him.lol.

secondly like i said earlier every owner wanted something different. softer, louder, more vocals, turn it up , turn it down, blah blah. ok look, when you do this to a dj you take away from the theme he is trying to establish. forcing me to jump made me forget some things i was going to play and quite frankly, you cant play vocal trance and 80' remixes every single time that's just boring.towards the end of the night bobby came up to me and explained the owners wernt happy. i pointed to the women dancing in the owners personal lounge and said "im not playing for the owners right now, im playing for them"despite a small crowd im proud to say i got some great compliments from people including some people from philli who said they really has a good time.
So overall, i had a great time and made some contacts. Will i be asked back? Probably not im sad to say.I felt no appreciation from the owners afterward. and bobby seemed somber when i said my goodbye to him at the end of the night.I think they were dissapointed about the crowd turnout tho.But that just happens sometimes. They just opened up after all,so they have to build that clientel over time.Oh well. I did it for the opportunity to play and nothing more. The baltimore scene is going to change whether baltimore is ready for it or not.theres a whole group of soon to be 18 clubbers waiting to bum rush baltimore looking for a new sound and ill be waiting there to give it to them! I just hope they continue to hire energetic dj's cuz even i wouldnt go there all the time if the music continues to be boring no matter how nice the club is.thanks for reading this and maybe ill see you baltimore sometime!

damn.. well it sounded like u had a pretty fun time for yourself. its a shame that the owners didn't like the music, but if they're not looking for trance, what can you really do? got any pictures of this club? i'd like to see what the inside looks like.

gluck with getting more gigs at that place though. keep at it.. mebe it'll turn out for the better.

Way to go Adam I bet your very happy to even play cause I remember asking 2 years why don't you spin at Glow. Now mabie a new door has open for you. I probaly going to be wrong on this but you should try and land some gigs in D.C./VA and mabie these owners at this new Baltimore venue mgiht start hearing about you.

There so many places in D.C. for you to go and plus we are here to show you support. Well hopefully Baltimore will get there trance and you'll be the guy to leade them into this

Baltimore needs a lot Trance education.

congrats man. Sounds like a cool place. Gotta say though, if the owners were expecting vocal house to be played, I can see how they might bw a little pissed about you dropping Scot Project and Sander Van Doorn bombs. lol, joke.

But what are you gonna do. You said the set was last minute, what can they really expect.
beema
congrats man!

Owners are pretty much goddamn morons no matter where you go. The guys with the most money can be pretty out of touch with reality and good taste. That's why it's really awesome when you get an owner who steps back and puts his trust in the promoter for where the direction and sound of the club goes. In an ideal world, owners wouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of the DJ booth.

SOO MUCH TO READ lol...You know my generation is very A.D.D. & can't read & be focused for so long. But I did cause your a good guy & I like your posts:D

Wow! Finally our Baltimorons decided to do something for people like myself. I lived in this city for 8 years, and the only clubs that had good trance music were:

*Trust (not anymore),

*17:22 AKA Vibe (a gay club with great music; don't get me wrong im straight, but because there's no trance in baltimore, sometimes I have to go to such venues [with girls of course :D ])

& now finally Im glad that something DC-like opened up here. I recently turned 18 (yes I know im young) and finally went to FUR/Glow (to see Armin). It wasn't my first event to attend (I'v been in the scene since 13years old), but it was my first time LEGALY to be at a club. Now, I really hope that this new "club X" will be simular to a Glow night. The only thing I hate about Glow is the crowed. Don't get me wrong I love all the TAs and everyone else who's passionate about the music, but there are some f*ck heads who come there to act retarded and ruin the vibe.

If this new club will get some big name TRANCE DJs, and if it's really that nice looking inside. Ill be verrrry happy! First of all, Ill save $ driving to DC. Second of all, more of my friends can come (since i know a looot of people in this area). Lastly, like i said hopefully the crowed is as good as it sounds.

yes the whole point is to grab a peice of that baltimore crowd thats going to dc every week.just a small peice.its not a big club but the atmosphere could be amazing with the right crowd and the right dj. ive not heard back form them and i not sure im going to.i think the owners are afraid to try a new sound(its a common problem for baltimore clubs).

what i think will happen is theyll panic and and try to many different sounds and not let one good sound settle in which will bore people and the club will start bleeding money. then in a twist of irony theyll be forced to sell the club at a loss to a group of people that will stick with the original idea of luring in baltimore clubbers with a dc sound and have great success with it later down the line. everything is just starting tho so who knows. id personally like to see the club go down that route but i've seen baltimore clubs fail to many times to be optimistic. hoping for the best tho. ill keep you informed about it.

yeah your right...most owners care about $ more than anything.
