Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement (JA) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring young people about business and economics. The JA experience helps young people discover leadership, entrepreneurial and workforce readiness skills so they can achieve their highest potential and future successes as citizens in the global community.

Junior Achievement member 1986-1988 :)

My mother worked for a lawyer (BILL KING) and he was a Supervisor for Junior Achievement - there were about 85 kids at the beginning of the program and we were divided into 3 companies - we had to form a company (name it - incorporate it - develop a product - name a board of directors eg. President - VP's of Finance, Marketing, Production, Personnel, Administration)..........we met twice weekly and made our products; sold and participated in various trade shows and produced a shareholders report and ultimately if you were very successful as a team made a little money too.......:)

with lawyers/senior managers/accountants/enterpreneurs as MENTORS we received a wealth of knowledge first hand on the workings of a small business....I really enjoyed my time spent in that program....

from the successes when someone so shy/timid/nervous breaks out of their shell and exceeds beyond anyones expectations - the way "we got along" outside the clickish highschool environment, the 50/50 draws - the dances and fundraisers we held - the life lessons and practical advice we received from successful business professionals - it was an awesome experience......

I haven't heard anything about this program for a long time now.......did anyone else join JA?? Do they still recruit in the schools????

Just curious??

All you on TA??? - Were you a JA????

We didn't have this junior achiever program at my school but I was in the enriched student stream, I was listed as "gifted" all the way from grade 2 up to grade 12 (where it apparently stopped).

From grade 3 to 8, I and 9 others from around the county were specially shipped to a "smart kid" school every Thursday where we did "smart kid" things that often had to do with logic and oh so much other that you'd never even touch on in regular school.

Good times, I guess.

You should have opted for the full time enriched program (not just Thursdays). Way more fun.

Yeah, they kept pushing me into it the whole time, but I was young and stupid and wanted to stay with my friends most of the time. I really should've done it, I'm sure I'd be in a much better educational position that I am.

My grade 9 year was the first year the gov’t de-streamed grade 9 (grade 9 no longer had general, advanced, enriched levels - it was de-streamed like elementary, apparently to help kids adjust/transition better into high school).

As a result of the de-streaming and the curriculum changes, those who came from the full-time grade 3 to grade 8 enriched program had already completed the -new- grade 9 curriculum (in grades 7 and 8). Basically, the full-time enriched students arrived the first day grade 9 with 5 high school credits already completed.

By the end of grade 13 – I had accumulated 11 OAC level courses (2 in English, calculus, algebra/geometry, finite, physics, chemistry, 2 in French, kinesiology, Canadian history).

See? More fun. ;)

I'm just a geek now...got invited into Golden Key International Honour Society...won't stay there long though :haha: :stongue: must've been a mistake...

sounds cool though...people should be encouraged for success, there are WAY too many people who are happy with mediocracy and lack of achievement it's a shame...

special ed rocked!!!!!

actually i was given the chance to go to the gifted program back in grade 6, however i didnt do my work in school nevermind a different program of work :P

all i did all day was develop plans to things up. from takin apart the PA system to pouring glue all over chantel's new figure skating jacket to just throwing Andrew Reminski head first into the garbage bin, i was a small evil genious in his hay. i wish i could go back to those days.

some sweet plans i tell ya. for example once we snuck back into the school at recess. and i stole all the huge stuffed naimals from the library but them beside my teachers desk. planted a syringe into his desk that my friend brought from home, since his father was a doctor. and i called the principal over and said Mr Buchilli was on drugs. ahhh those were the times. inschool suspensions and foot hockey. skateboarding and tackle football. redass and pull down ppl's pants while they were hanging from the goal post. :wtf:
