I say maths too, but not when I say "You do the math" :conf:

I say Math. No S. I think adding the S indicates that the word is plural, which in my mind doesn't make a lot of sense. It's the same thing as gymnastics, do you say gyms?

Hmmm, I can't seem to think of another example, but either way, Maths sounds wrong to me. So boo on the S!

people that put the "s" on the end are idiots...:p

Mathematics is a combination of all mathmatical languages. When you say that you are doing math or the math... it is refering to one type..

Would someone say that they need to do an iteration or would they say they need to do the math behind it?

And as the dictionary states:

math
Mathematics.

maths
n. Chiefly British (used with a sing. verb)

Mathematics.

math

n : a science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement [syn: mathematics, math]

So its not the yanks that use it differently.. its the brits!

'Math' just sounds weird to me. But hey, I forgive you.

Does anyone else see the humor in the idea that we are having a Grammar discussion about Mathematics?
