Another computer question

Alright, for those who remember, I had some massive problems with my computer that ended up in me having to buy a new power supply and motherboard. My question is what is better for your computer, turn it off every night, put it on standby at night or leave it always on? Right now I put it in standby right now to try to conserve energy, but don't know what that is actually doing to my powersupply. Any thoughts?

always on is the best way to go, if you turn it on and off, it stresses the components and they wear out quicker (constant heating and cooling, expanding and contracting, etc.) restart it once every day, to keep things fresh, but other than that keep it on.

Theres logic to this. PC's can be left on 24/7 all the time with no harmful effects to their hardware. Look at people like IBM whose PC's never go off.

Alternatively i turn my PC off at night, and on in the morning. My PC gets turned off and on prob 5 times a day. Thats not really detrimental either. Leaving it on for 2hrs instead of turning it off and on 15 times will be alot better for the components, but if u only turn it on and off a few days a day like me, theres not much difference between that and leaving it on period.

But if u dont use it for the 7hrs you're asleep (downloading/uploading etc) id personally turn it off.

the theory use to be for every 40hours of up time there should be 4hours of downtime. But thats a saying that I heard back in highschool. I'll probably go mon-fri without turning it off, then maybe off for one night of the week (usually when i visit my parents) - i did find that if you keep it on constantly (i'd keep mines running sometimes for months on end with restarts) that you end up eating that power supply up. I'd say lets her run and then give her a rest every week for a few hours. It's hard for me to give you exact up/down times because one of my machines is literally an FTP/Access Point to all my at-home files. Usually the case when I send work home, not a fan of carrying around CDs or usb drives. So you can imagine that thing literally runs all the time but it doesn't take a huge load all the time. If anything it's running a solid upload/download to my friends and anyone who has access to my FTP.

I'll give my server a reboot once a week, and a hard shut down for an hour once a month. My production machine gets the 1 downtime night per week.

Staying on or on standby is better, as zech mentioned, on/off causes more power spikes in components and, whilst highly unlikely, can cause surges that greatly reduce the lifespan of components.

This is why I put so much time and money into making my machine inaudible from my bed, so I can sleep with it on

I'm not convinced that it makes a whole of difference whether you regularly turn your computer on/off or leave it on all the time.

Record Uptime: 4w 1d 2h 28m 25s 28ms
^^ No prizes for guessing which I prefer, though. :p

I agree that the difference is minimal, but the query was which is better ;)

i never turn my computer off.

i think the difference between 24/7-on and on and off 5 times a day is nothing. It's if its on and off 15+ times a day it'll be detrimental in the long run.

turning your computer off is like buying a dog and keeping it in a cage.
