US in the 20th century - an interesting history course I'm taking...

I'm usually not the one to bash the US, but after completing half of this course, which conenctrates on the US internally in the 20th century (not including foreign policy), I must say that I'm amazed about how dark, ugly, and disturbing the US history really is...It really sheds a lot of light on the many internal problems they have today...but, regardless I must say it really opened my eyes to many things I didn't know. If I was an American kid right now, studying my own recent history I would be quite embarrased and ashamed of it :( :( :( All I gotta say is that it's not pretty...

Just thought I'd share...midterm tomorrow :toothless

Thanks for sharing.

All history/political/cultural/gender based courses in the academic world follow the same agenda. You better start realizing that every course you take is going to be anti-corporate, anti-capitalist, anti-Israel and anti-American, and that there is always another side to the coin despite what your profs/textbooks tell you.

no no it has nothing to do with anti-corporation or anything...

Examples...there are plenty - seggregation, racism, antisemitism, the Red Scare, hypocrisy, Ku Klux Klan, stupid political decisions and much much more...not ALL bad of course...but it's rather ugly :(

It has to do with left-wing politics in general. Don't let yourself be brainwashed - research the other side of these issues outside the classroom.

All I'm saying is, you may consider your lectures and textbooks to be a statement of fact, but in actuality they tend to be incredibly one-sided and you'll find that there is a wealth of information out there that tells an entirely different story and that is never touched on in any of your courses. I've read many books and heard many lectures, and although they generally don't contain any blatantly false information, many have glaring omissions and/or contain statements of opinion masquerading as factual information.

U.S. society has certainly been rife with social problems throughout history, but what makes it especially unique is that it has been self-reforming, unlike so many other societies and cultures which had/have the same problems.

Well ok but this is pretty widely known. I expected something along the lines of really deep under the table. Like did you know that the anti pregnancy pill was introduced waaaay back in the 1960s or 50, but after the US govt decided a population expansion was neccesary it was made illegal/demonized?

There are lots of things like that actually it's just that I don't want to go crazy into detail...

Like there was a massive legal campaign and fight in the late 1920's against Darwinism and teaching it in school...only according to bible!
...Or that dancing is not allowed, or prohibition laws (no alcoholism)...the segregation laws...i meant there's so much... it's quite interesting really...

lol...yeah that's actually something i learned in a different history class but it's true...it's just funny, some of the things when you are reading them are border-line rediculous and insane...i mean i know those were different times back then but...yickes :)

As much as I hate the US, i do believe they play a vital role in the world. They have contributed a tonne of scientific research over the last 100 years. Just think about how much would not be possible with their work. They have also, in my opinion, given the world the most facinating and well made movies, and tv shows (entertainment in general).

Just wondering if your course touches on any of the positives, or does it just focus on what went wrong?
