man, garbage equipment isn't confined to Hip hop dj's and turntablists. I've played on all kinds of set ups. Deal with it, because it's a part of playing out. Just be prepared for anything and everything that can go wrong.
Madbar is probably the worst booth in the city, but you just deal with it and get the job done. Packing up and going home is pretty whack.. even if the equipment is garbage. Deal with it man, it's the way it is when you're playing out. |
word up... although I played mad bar once and had no issues with the booth. |

As for hip hop dj's and turntablists needing different equipment, that may be true. But in the end a turntable is a turntable, and a mixer is a mixer. I've played on tech 12's turned sideways and a battle mixer and I made it work. It happens, and it sucks, but just deal with it.

I figured it had to do with the fact that hip hop DJ's are usually scratching, and NEVER let two songs play out together for the entire duration....Thus, making the quartz accuracy of a Technic almost pointless. Most EDM DJ's will often carry out really long mixes as opposed to hip hop, and thus, the need for precision accuracy is more important.....That's what I figured anyway. I could be wrong as i've never really DJ'ed hip hop. |

Hypothetically speaking, if you had a party with direct drive Gemini's, I'm pretty sure most professional DJ's would refuse to play instead of trying to bite the bullet and take their chances at playing a crappy set. Sure, the likelihood of any competent promoter using Gemini's is rare, or unlikely, but it illustrates my point of "limits". |
This has happened to a good friend of mine. He showed up and they had ass direct drive turntables. He said it was the worst set he'd ever played, but you know what? He played, despite the crap set up.
Here's how I see it... I'm lucky to be able to get up in front of people and play my music. If I didn't do it, I know there are thousands of people that would. I feel that I'm privledged to have an opportunity to play to people, therefore, I try to make whatever set up I'm given, work. |

I remember reading an Oakenfold interview, where he said that he turned up in Bombay to play a gig, and they didnt have ANY turntables! Just cassette decks!!!!
So he made his manager go to a local shop and get some cassettes, and he played a set from those. Now that is what you call adapting to the situation. |

I am sure most of the TA DJs can speak to the fact that the equipment in the old VIP room at SYSTEM was always a challenge. |
I know, I played there as well.
I had a gig in August where I could not see the mixer. Now that is a crap situation - everything worked fine, but my boyfriend had to stand in the booth holding a flashlight over the mixer for 2 hours. If he hadn't of been there, I don't know what I would have done. |

They do on occasion, but those are usually the hip hop DJs playing at the higher level who aren't afriad to really mess around with what their decks can do. I learned how to mix on a battle setup, so scratch mixers, and sideways turntables aren't that big a deal to me, the mixer only limits my creativity when it comes to mixes. In fact, I enjoy trying out a little scratching from time to time, and prefer my tables to be sideways.
And another thing : if hip hop DJs, especially ones who haven't figured it out yet, beatmatching is still a great skill to have [I know several who are clueless on this fundamental skill], because it'll make scratch mixing and beat juggling so much easier, and sound a hell of a lot cleaner. Really great scratching can sound terrible if you can't keep a beat.
I have no idea how I'd handle working with decks with inconsistant pitch, I don't think I could. It's one thing if the pitch is messing up while you're adjusting it, another if it won't stay locked.
And yeah, I agree, bad equipment does make the DJ look really bad. Hell, I cut up digweed at LoL for his technical problems, even tho it was no fault of his. |

I believe they'd call the film about that DJ..."It's all gone Gorky Park"
*for those who know their Cockney slang* ;) |

AAAHHH Cockney Slang
Now that takes me back to My London days
Its amazing that very few people know what the Showtime TV series (there was also a movie) "Is Harry on the Boat" means
for those of you that haven't seen it , its about British teens partying in Ibiza and the Tour reps who look after them , shot in and around Ibiza town , its always good for a laugh
Oh yeah so what does it mean??
well in Cockney rhyming slang
the full sentance would be
Did you get harry monk on her boat race ??
I will leave it to your imagination for now :stongue: |
