Maybe a dumb question to some, but when you hear a dj play an accapella over a track, which is so common these days, is it usually a pre-recorded version of the track that the dj made up before hand, or is it done on the fly?

prolly mostly done on the fly,

but im not an expert -.-

that will definitely depend on the dj. and depending on the mashup, if it sounds too good, too in sync, with multiple cue points, either he has 3 decks and good hardware playing around or it's recorded yeh. but it really depends

it also depends on the type of acapella. spoken word, or most any salmodic (i believe isthe correct term) vocals can be mixed on the fly. sung acapellas, ie. those that need a tempo, well, it can be done, but will be a bit harder, so those might be mashed up beforehand.
