| Well i beleive phrase locking is when you put the phrases of the songs in time not only the beats, this is required when mixing 2 vocal tracks together. Bascily its keeping the tracks so that you start the intro 36 bars (or watever) of one track in the outro 36 bars of the song your mixing out of so that when the vocals end on one track the other will start singing |

what he said, but I think he's wrong in his terminology.
a bar is a grouping of 4 beats, and a phrase is 32 beats or 8 bars.
Mixing for me always happens like this [unless I'm doing a slam mix, or mixing off a breakdown, or long smooth sound overtop of one track], as it matches the hi-hat markers in the tracks and makes it sound cleaner overall. Most layers/sounds/vocals that are added and subtracted in a track happen on the beginning of a new phrase, so you can imagine how much it helps a mix when you're tracks are phrase locked. |

| Ah I see, this is actually how I mix, but I didn't know its technical name, i.e. what I would call 'mixing on the down beat'. |
