Political Consumerism

Hey guys, I need some help here. I'm taking a Political Economy class and I'm have a decent amount of trouble with it. Politics and economy stuff are not my strong suit. I have to write a paper, and I have a topic...it's political consumerism and the corruption of the american/canadian government. I have a pretty broad topic b/c I'm not even sure how to do it.
Right now, I'm trying to find specific examples to use. The only topic I can really think of is George W. Bush and his family pretty much bought his way into office...and someone mentioned the US Embargo of Cuba...but since I'm not really keen on the issues, I'm having trouble finding the infromation that I need.
Does anyone want to be a kind helping hand and help me search...or give me some other ideas for examples?
Any help would be appretiated!
Thanks

Chretian's media sponsorship scandel in Canada.
USA gov't contracting in Iraq and in the New Orleans rebuilding effort.

what level course is this? It will help in knowing how much detail to go into and how long of a paper this is supposed to be.

It's a 3rd level course and about 4-6 pages...not too long.

Thanks :)

Corporate/Gov't Deviance is a broad topic... I TA'd a public policy course that covered gov't corruption and the best advice I could give you is narrow your topic down to something more specific (i.e. the impact of a specific case study - Haliburton has already been alluded to).

There are several books that may be available in your library that can give you a tonne of examples and their significance:

Mancuso, M. et al. "A Question of Ethics"

Ermann, M.D. and Lundman, R.J. "Corporate and Governmental Deviance
6th Edition"

Ryanrd, P. and Shugarman, D.P. "Cruelty & Deception: The Controversy
Over Dirty Hands in Politics"

Pearce, F. and Snider, L. "Corporate Crime: Contemporary Debates"

In addition there are numerous political message boards that love to cover topics in government corruption. These boards may be the fastest way to get both sides of a particular issue - especially Haliburton and the Tom DeLay saga over Texas gerrymandering and campaign money laundering. Two of my favourites:

www.perspectives.com/forums - THE most up to date and rapidly changing political forum on the internet. Very easy to follow.

www.ypa.org - Young Politicians of America - not kept as up to date, but is often a good starting point on the issues.

I hope this information helps a little bit more. If there is anything else I can help with, email me at [email protected]

Good Luck!

The reason I psoted this is BECAUSE I need to narrow down my topic. The paper isn't very long. I needed some specific examples, and since I don't know much about the topic to begin with, I was having trouble finding them.

Thanks for all the websites and book listings though. I'll take a look at them when I get home from work, and let you know if I need some more assistance.

Thanks everyone!!!
