now then this pic here shows the back of it...

so im assuming you would use the RCA input jacks to plug into your mixer. then you would use a usb cord to attach the external soundcard to the laptop? |
Ooh wish I had that. I've got the Audigy 2 NX, which doesn't have RCA jacks. So I have to use a Y adaptor, which forces my recordings to be mono. ): I also have a suspicion that it's dragging down the quality. |

Why would your y adapter make your mixes mono? RCA -> Minijack
rca is stereo and minijack (headphone plug looking thing) is Stero.
it could VERY slightly be draging down quality, but not much.
get a monster cable if ur worried about lost quality on your y-cable. |

| It would be Line-in. If you find a way to encode in audacity better than 128kbps, please let me know. I usually save as .wav then use another program to make it mp3. |

| Another way is to install shoutcast and shoutcast in whatever quality you want to it and then using streamripper within winamp to rip it straight to mp3. :) |

| M-Audio Transit USB, $90 for a new one on eBay. Its got all the features of that box (all the important ones anyway) but its about the width and length of a credit card so its much more portable (and cheaper). |

you use this product?
So if i use this one. I will have to have a cable that goes from red and white into one line in jack right? Still suggest using the ground loop isolator to remove unwanted hiss? or will this product solve this problem as well? |

I just bought some CDJ 200s and DJM 707 mixer, and my laptop does not have a line input for recording my sets. I also bought a USB midi keyboard (M-Audio Keystation 61es) and I am starting to learn how to produce music.
I was wondering if there is a sound card that you guys could recommend for my laptop that would be good for both recording sets and producing. It canbe either Firewire OR USB. Something that gives you a good "bang for your buck."
Would I want something simple that has online a line in?:
USB Input/Output with LINE-IN Sound Card $29:

OR as mentioned before the M-Audio Transit $85:

Creative External Sound Blaster Live! SB0490 (up to 96kHz in stereo) $47:

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 NX $102:

M-AUDIO 9900-40727-00 $135:

Echo Audio Indigo DJ - has 2 stereo line-level outputs (one for your amp, the other with volume control normally used for headphones) $180:

Are these the cards I should be looking at? I am really lost here. Which cards should I be researching, which do you recommend for my situation.
PS: I don’t have a good set of speakers (just my laptop speakers which are decent, Hardon/Kardon from an HP Pavillion zd7000) is it necessary for me to practice DJing with a good set of speakers? Or can I practice quietly with my headphones and just my laptop speakers. If I should upgrade to some good laptop speakers, any recommendations? I don’t want to practice very loud since I live in an apartment, plus most people don’t like trance/house. |

In response to your first question, you should be thinking about a firewire recording interface. M-Audio sells a few of those, such as the M-Audio Firwire Audiophile Computer Recording Interface for $199 at MusiciansFriend.com. Go to .M-Audio Firewire Audiophile Computer Recording Interface. This is something I am asking for Christmas and all indications is that firewire is better for recording or producing.
To your second question YES. I am in the same boat as you are...I don't have any external speakers for my laptop, just the ones that came with them (harmon kardon) and they suck (after buying CDJ 1000 MK2s...I can't afford monitors and I need $ for school). It's best to get a nice pair of monitors. You don't need super expensive ones and not cheap ones either. Ones around the $299 or $499 price range (for a pair) should be adequate. I'm saving up for some and I know that M-Audio has some decent ones..the BX-5A and the BX-8A for $299 and $499. The Behringer Truth's are $349 and seem to have decent sound, as well as the Event TR5 and the KRK Rockit 5's. Any of these should have much better sound quality when recording sets |

that firewire says it records at 24-bit/96kHz. Why would this be desirable as CD's cannot be compatible with such high bit rate? |
