the other day i get home from school early and decide to take a short nap before work. i turn on the TV and while flipping i begin to watch one of those paranormal shows on discovery or somthin like that. before i know it i fall asleep and i partially awake to the sound(or so i thought) of my front door slamming. thinking my dad had also gotten home early i try to get up when i notice i couldnt move my body, i was completely paralyzed and my eyes were open, like my mind was awake but my body still was asleep. soon i hear footsteps walking into my room and stand directly behind my bed. i was facing away from the person/spirit when i tried to speak and ask if it was my dad. still i could not speak. i noticed the room suddenly dropped temperature dramatically and i franticly tried to move my fingers and legs. i totally freaked out and after a few moments got movment and sensation back in my body. nobody was home.

hi hiram,
not many people know this, but i went to school for psychology before i became a dj. i also have had many different types paranormal experiences myself. i'm here to help anyone who may be confused about what they are experiencing. what happened to you was a condition called 'sleep paralysis.' it can be brought on by a number of things, ranging from being overtired, stress, partying, or having narcolepsy and not knowing it. if it continues, you may want to have it checked out. i too have had sleep paralysis and its very scary. this condition is common enough to have had happened to lots of people and they often feel that spirits have "pinned them down" or that their houses are haunted.
now here's the tricky part... i have also had experiences with telepathically communicating with my friends who are alive, during my sleep. i have also had experiences with my dead mother. the moment she died, i was in the shower at my house, then i got out and laid on the bed and went into a trance. my mom had just died of cancer and she came to me and 'dont be sad for me, for there is no more pain, see?" then she put her hands on my face and i felt a rush of inner peace. when i woke up, i heard a baby cry as i was going into my waking state, but there was no baby anywhere around. a few moments later, my dad called to say that she had passed away. so if that can happen, then in a sleep paralysis induced state, it is quite possible that a spirit had been able to cross over for those few seconds and try to communcate with you.

yea, i did some research and i came accross the condition of sleep paralysis. now that you mention i think the spirit was trying to call my name. my parents call me "tito" for short and i can remember the spirit(or whatever it was) whispering that to me. this further led me to believe that it was my dad standing there. ill PM you later with more details. thanks!

This exact same thing has happened to me many times, oddly enough it use to happen to my father when he was young and to my grandfather before him odd thing is that it happened to them around my age as well (19) I asked my doctor about it cause it really is a horrible scary feeling, whenever it happens to me I feel like im half suffocating as well like there is a pillow over my head or something. The first time it happened I also felt the presence of someone in the room with me and no one was home. The doctor said told me that it could be a range of many things from over-exhaustion to things that we eat. I still haven't found an actual cause/affect of it but I wouldn't rule out the paranormal. Hope you find a way to get rid of it if you do heads up! ;)

My whole family has had this. There are studies of people who have sleep paralysis. Depending on your beliefs you might see a ghost, alien or the devil (if you're religious).

I find that if I sleep on my sides or if I have a pill next to me I don't have this issue.

If you have a significant other have him or her just touch your hand while your're sleeping. It works.

nice guess, partially right.

there are 5 stages o sleep, once you fall asleep your brain activity decreases, level 1 - 4, then it increases in activity by going from level 3 to 2, then instead of going to level 1 it jumps to level 5...which is REM sleep.

Rem sleep is crazy cause your entire brain is active, much like it is when your awake, but your unconscious. Also during REM all of your major muscles are paralyzed. its not a wierd thing, its just how it is. So when you suddenly wake up from rem, you could still be paralyzed. Your brain is also going crazy with activity which can cause auditory or visual hallucinations.
