TECHNO/HOUSE "HITS"
[These are the house/techno "hits" that you might have heard on KISS FM or
103.1 FM. They're all pretty catchy and instantly recognizable. This is the only
time I actually used short radio edit versions, so I could get more tracks on
the mix. It's more of a general overview of the most popular songs in the
genre.]
--Kay Cee-"Escape": Instantly catchy house hit you've probably already heard.
Listen for that phat bassline after the beats drop out. "Dee dee dee, dee dee
dee…"
--Darude-"Sandstorm": Edit of one of my favourite techno/hard trance songs. I
used to go crazy any time the deejay spun this one! Such high NRG.
--Voodoo & Serano-"Blood is Pumpin'": Edit of great house hit that's got a
subtle ascending synth line during the "chorus" and that tweaking digitized
sound you hear in techno songs.
--Cosmic Gate-"Exploration of Space": Edit of a wonderfully melodic hard
house hit. I saw the producer himself spin this one at club Blue in June for my
two year anniversary. There's nothing like dancing to the records that the
deejay actually created.
--CRW-"I Feel Love": Remix of catchy hard house hit that might have you
humming it for weeks.
--Planet Fuse 3-"Devotion": Remix of one of my favourite songs. Other than
that catchy drone-like melody, I love that staccato keyboard part about 30
seconds after she yells, "Yeah!" It was so hard getting ahold of this long-deleted
import-only release.
--Honey B-"Surrender": Remix of bouncy song that's got a catchy Asian melody.
Suzette says she pictures those Chinese marching communist students dressed
in red, waving their flags when she hears this.
--Cygnus X-"The Orange Theme": Remix of hauntingly pretty trance song.
_____________________________________________________________________________
--Libra presents Taylor-"Anomaly (Calling Your Name)": Ferry Corsten remix of
one of the biggest hits in early trance. Libra is bt and Taylor was one of
the deejays spinning at that Crystal Method rave I went to next to your school
in '98. This song crossfades into...
--Bedrock-"Heaven Scent": Edit of John Digweed's huge house hit heard during
the climax of the San Francisco rave movie Groove.
--Alice Deejay-"Better Off Alone": Edit of massive house hit for LSDJ.
--Lustral-"Everytime": House hit with minor-key vocals and that flanger
effect keyboard dub.
--Mario Piu presents DJ Arabesque-"The Vision": Perky house hit with a good
chorus
--Art of Trance-"Madagascar": Edit of Ferry Corsten's remix of haunting
trance hit. I'll always think of my friend Damara when I hear this one. I picked
her up from ballet class once and her entire class of teenagers in tights were
leaping around in unison to this. It was a surreal, yet beautiful sight.
--atb-"9 PM (Till I Come)": Matt Darey remix of Andre Tannenbaur's house hit.
It took me forever to track this one down, too. I kept hearing it at raves
and it would get stuck in my head, but of course I could barely hum the melody.
I finally heard it at some random guy's apartment and found out the name. I
literally had tried to found that for close to a year.
--Kernkraft 400-"Zombie Nation" DJ Gius remix of very European-sounding house
hit with sing-along chorus
--DJ Jean-"The Launch": Edit of overplayed house hit with that descending
melody. Another one of those songs I'd heard, sang to numerous people like an
idiot, and finally discovered the title
PROGRESSIVE TRANCE
[This is my favourite type of dance music. They call it progressive trance
because it starts off simple, and then progressively builds sound upon sound
until you've got dozens of drumbeats, melodies, and bass lines going on at once,
like a symphony. The melodies can be beautiful, and the sounds just out of
this world, some of which you've never heard before.]
--C.M-Dream Universe: Epic Tilt mix of great trance song, with tribal beats
and chanting, pulsing bass, high energy tweaking sound (for you to twirl your
glowsticks around), and slowly building melody. One of my all-time faves.
There's also a more mellow pure trance version I like a lot.
--Lost Tribe-Gamemaster: Popular track that's got a very hummable melody. The
utopian spoken lyrics are a bit cheesy, but you can do cheesy. I really like
the message: "Imagine Earth restored to her regal beauty…"
--bt-Godspeed: High energy trance by Brian Transeau with memorable keyboard
chorus and wisps of vocals.
--Paragliders-Change Me: Smooth epic trance with flowing melodies and
countermelodies.
--So-Real-You Take My Breath Away: More smooth trance with pretty piano
chorus
--Veracocha-Carte Blanche: Pretty trance with a surging melody and delicate
piano, which slowly builds until it explodes.
_____________________________________________________________________________
--Albion-Air: If anyone ever asked me what trance sounds like, I'd play them
this song. It has all the elements. The music just makes you want to float
away up to the clouds.
--Cascade-Transcend: The kind of trance that makes you feel. It's got such
emotion packed into that chorus. I looked forever for this long-deleted 12"
record. Finally, deejay Thee-O sold me his for $10 at a club he was spinning at.
--Electrique Boutique-Revelation: Biblical trance! This melody might get
stuck in your head for weeks. Another one of my faves. Just listen to that rolling
bass line!
--Noel W. Sanger-The Fire of Love: Pretty trance song with piano, flanger
(that's the rocket engine-sounding effect) and extremely catchy
melody/countermelody.
--Steve Morley-Reincarnations: Edit of Hard trance track. This and the next
four songs are all from DJ Misja Helsloot's In Trance We Trust 001 compilation.
My friend Janessa gave me a copy of this mix that her friend burned off the
internet. But it wasn't labeled and I was dying to know what it was because I
loved so many songs from it. It was over three years later before I finally
just looked it up on google.com and identified the disc.
--DJ Philip-Spring: Smooth trance that makes you feel.
--DJ Misja-E-Mocean: I'm running out of descriptions of trance songs.
--Elisir-The Top: Remix of hard trance track. Catchy melody with a harder
edge.
--Reversed Twister-De-Tuned: Another one of my favourite trance songs with
lots of great melodies
(MOSTLY) DEEP HOUSE
[After jumping around to hard trance all night at the club, I used to like to
go into the smaller house room to slow my heart rate back down. This music
has deeper bass. Trance is my favourite type of dance music, but house music has
soul. Some of these songs are progressive house that sound like trance
anyways.]
The Thrillseekers f/Sheryl Deane-Synaesthesia: Epic Paul van Dyk remix of an
already great song. I have like eight different remixes of this song because I
was looking for this particular one, but didn't know who remixed it.
"Synaesthesia" is when your senses get mixed and you can hear colour.
DJ Sakin & Friends-Protect Your Mind (For the Love of a Princess): Yes, if
you didn't already guess, this is the melody from Braveheart. Great song.
Cabala-Dark Blue: One of the prettiest, catchiest melodies I know; and it
takes about two minutes before it even gets the chorus. I spent over a year
trying to track this one down. Thee-o had it listed on his tape as "Deeper Blue" by
Caladan. That's why I couldn't find it. I checked Whoop! Records' web site
and finally tracked it down. It's like a treasure hunt sometimes trying to find
these songs.
Push-Universal Nation: This one's just got a great, hypnotic sound, with a
"Whoo!" or two thrown in for good measure.
Gouryella-Gouryella: Another hypnotic sounding track, with that great flange
effect. I distinctly hear the drumbeat for The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up"
during the breakdown.
Solar Stone-Flood: Now this is the kind of deep house I like grooving to
after 2 a.m.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Freefall-Skydive: One of the biggest dance clubs hits of the year. It's very
bouncy and pretty. "I feel wonderful…/From heaven did you come?"
Greece 2000-Three Drives on Vinyl: One of the most popular songs ever; all
the elements are perfect. Original version had cheesy lyrics, but this
instrumental is without equal.
Nalin & Kane-Beachball: Very Euro-house sounding track with ocean waves and
bongos and some darker-edged sounds mixed in by Tall Paul.
Jose Padilla f/Angela John-Who Do You Love: Definitely my all-time favourite
house song. The Chicane remix has that retro-sounding delayed keyboards,
scuffling cymbals, and sweeping strings. God, when those strings kick in, I want to
cry!
Res-They-Say Vision: Bastone & Burnz remix of an extremely catchy rock song
by Philly artist Res. They turned it into a bass-heavy hard house anthem.
There's also a house mix of Jewel's "Serve the Ego" that is surprisingly quite
good.
B-15 Project f/Crissy D. & Lady G-Girls Like Us: I finish this mix out with a
breakbeat (as opposed to standard 4/4 time) track. First heard this on the
soundtrack for the movie Groove. |
eww sandstorm, and none of that is techno, and techno is not a generic term for all music with a beat
gouryella is not house, synaesthesia is not house
i think you are just making up genres
reminds me of a kazaa mp3 i once saw it was labeled house/techno/trance/jungle/rave
LOL, i hate kazaa people
edit: better off alone is NOT even close to house "--Alice Deejay-"Better Off Alone": Edit of massive house hit for LSDJ."
its just mainstream karaoke dance stuff |

thanks for actually reading my post, though, i appreciate the feedback. i think sandstorm's a great song, i don't really care if it's popular or not. if it's good, it's good. i know techno isn't a generic term, but i don't want to use "dance" or "electronica." so does techno have to come only from detroit or what? so what genre do YOU consider gouryella and synaesthesia? i definitely think the latter has some progressive house elements. it just depends on what mix you're listening to. same with better off alone. pronti & kalmani are italian producers of house music, no? and there's some trancey-sounding things going on there, too. i've been listening to trance and deep house, etc. for six years now, and i'm still a bit fuzzy on the genres. i've read all the style descriptions on allmusic.com. i just try to group similar sounding tracks together when i make a mix, disregarding the different genres sometimes. thanks again for your post and not being cruel about it LOL
oh, did you know you re-posted by entire message? thanks ;) |

1. U didnt want to refer to Gouryella as Dance or Electronica. Let me see , wot genre isit hmmmmmmmmmmmm? (www.tranceaddict.com):)
2. of course mndeg wanted to quote u, to correct ur essay of . |
|
|
| raveballs |
i still don't think it's that funny. gouryella samples (as far as i can tell) the drumbreak from prodigy's "smack my bitch up." and the vocal mix of "synaesthesia" is definitely not trance. i didn't want to use "trance" as a generic term, either.
and it's not an essay. it was some notes i typed up for a friend who i was introducing to kind of dance music i like to listen to. i'm sensitive to misinformation. if anyone can break down the genre of those songs, one by one, by all means, be my guest.
