Are the newer motherboards that support processors such as P4... able to support older processors..? (pentium 3 - 500 mhz) ???
i need a new motherboard due to the fact that my current one doesnt have an AGP slot...
so i was thinkin of gettin one now..and get a more powerful processor later....
please help out..

if they have the slots/socket 4 the processor 2 fit, u should hav no probz, but im no expert.

no reason why it shouldn't....
but i suggest asking an expert, or posting a thread in some computer related forum.

if you want to put a 500 mhz pIII it will not work on a P4 mobo if thats what ur asking

No you won't be able to use a new motherboard (any) with a p3 500 that'll support the latest processors. To be quite honest you'd be best off getting an AMD system and getting an AMD XP processor as these are rockets and they're cheaper then intel as well. Can you tell me if you're using a slot 1 P3 or a socket 370?

The more i know the more i can help
nyczliquid
im pretty sure its a slot 1...

anyways..
sorry for the ridiculous question i asked... i lookd back at it and i feel pretty stupid..lol :D
im just gonna give it time to save more money so i can just get a new mobo and processor...problem solved
:toothless
thanks for tryin to help

No,

PIV uses a different no. of pins than PIII so all PIV boards are propraitry to the PIV chips .

U would not get the required performance anyway if you could put a PIII chip on a PIV board as it does not expand the bus capabilities

Ok, nyczliquid, if i was in your case, instead of buying everything brand new b/c you don't have an AGP slot, i would buy a PCI-to-AGP card.... they sell them and i have one on my older AT board running my internet machine... works fine! :)

If you guys need a "chip-reference", here's what i can think of off the top of my head....

Socket 4 = Classic Pentium 60/66, 5v, 273 pins in a 21x21 PGA grid
Socket 5 = Classic Pentium 75/90/100/120, 3.3v, 320 pins in a 37x37 spga grid
Socket 6 = Not used, 3.3v, 235 pins in a 19x19 PGA grid
Socket 7 = Pentium MMX, Fast Classic Pentium, AMD K5, AMD K6, Cyrix M II, and Cyrix MediaGX, 2.5v to 3.3v, 321 pins in a 37x37 SPGA grid
Super Socket 7 = AMD K6-2, 2.5v to 3.3v, 321 pins in a 37x37 SPGA grid
Socket 8 = Pentium Pro, 3.3v, 387 pins in a 24x26 SPGA grid
Slot 1 = Pentium II & III & some IV & Celerons(ranging from 233Mhz to 550Mhz) ,2.8v to 3.3v, 242 pins in 2 rows, rectangular shape
Socket 370= Intel Celeron above 550Mhz
Socket A = AMD Athlon, Duron
Socket 478 = some Pentium IV's

now remember, some chips (like pentium IV & celerons) can fit more than one type of socket, just depends on what speed it is, etc... I can't remember the speeds for the chips i listed for Socket A and Socket 478......

but anyways, hope this helps :)

well technically they're all "good", as long as they work ;)

i can't remember the name of the one i got - i think it was an NVidia.... anyway i got it at Best Buy... CompuUSA and Brandsmart have them too.... any of these near you? Any large computer store will have them, cost less than or around 100 bucks... cheap, good fix :)
