Hey guys,

I'm looking to give up some radio time to some hot local talent. So if you're interested send me a 60 minute demo mix.

In order to qualify the DJs must:

  1. Not have a regular weekly residency at a local Toronto or Ottawa venue
  2. must spin Vinyl and/or CDs ONLY
  3. must play house, progressive or various forms of Trance
  4. you must not have spun on Paradox within the last year

Demo mix submition deadline is Midnight Tuesday November 1st. Out of all mixes submitted I will pick 3 DJs (1 per week) to spin a 2 hour set on the Paradox Radio show which airs Thursday nights on Club246 Radio 100.7FM in Toronto, 97.9FM in Ottawa, Element Radio 103.1FM in Los Angeles and from coast to coast on Starchoice Satellite system.
Contact me at [email protected] for directions on getting your mix in to me or if you have any other questions. Feel free to also post up your questions in this thread.

Thank you and Good luck!

P.S. I figured I should put this in here because everytime I do these kind of contests there is always some smart guy that expects to be paid for playing. THIS IS NOT A PAYING GIG. It's strickly for your own promotion only.

...in other words does not want a final skratch, ableton DJ, etc... people keep hating on the same technology that people who made the tracks in the first place on vinyl used...or they wish to see a DJ who can beatmatch as if its some rocket science..dumbety dumb..i guess its still about the DJ skills rather than the music he plays or smile he could put on a crowds face..after all people come to see a dj and how good he can eq and beatmatch and double, not the music

Do you honestly bitch about everything? lol. He's giving you a very nice chance. So you take the piss completely out of it. I can't enter, because i've played it in the last month, let alone the last year, but hey guys, it's a big show, jump into it if you can :).

I'd consider FS a form of Vinyl mixing..... but the other things you claim are completely naive and your lack of experience is clear. If you think Djing is simply about picking tracks people will like, you're a moron. I'd go out on a limb and say you've NEVER played in a real club environment. You need to educate yourself some more cuz you clearly aren't capable of appreciating the art form, technique, or the industry as a breathing machine. It's people like you that bring the industry back a few steps...

Grow up... this guy's giving an opportunity... quit yer bitchin...

"guess its still about the DJ skills" - Gee good call... it's a DJ COMPETITION, fool...

Is hardware and software unqualified for this competition?

Software aspect being WAV tracks loaded into Virtual DJ. Everything else is still hardware based (mixer, controllers). See my avatar...

Let me know

Thanks

would a 48 minute mix cut it as the demo cd??

Final sktratch you still are using turntables or cdj, so therefore it's not in that category, I believe he's reffering to digital mixing.

Suffee you are too funny. You guys do not know suffee, he gets kicks from stirring you guys up. The more pissed you get, the more laughs he has. Having said that, he has probably been around in the scene since some of you were about 10-11 years old so I wouldn't label him either.

Tygon,

You either misunderstood the post or you are completely off.

First off, please do not comment how people like me take the scene a few steps back when you have absolutely no idea what a person like myself has done for the scene… do I think the music the DJ plays is all what it is ALL about? Certainly not…in that case you can have people up there with a cassette deck playing tunes one after another…but it does have a MAJOR MAJOR factor. In the end it is about the music, the flow, the selection the order it’s in…. The mixing and what not should be taken care of either way..and beatmatching is not an artform...mixing is…but not beatmatching (which alone is not mixing)…it’s a shame you view it all as a machine… if people are coming to an edm event to see how well a DJ can mix or eq…that is just pathetic..and it’s not about that…its not about the DJs skills. Atleast a scene like this…it is for hip hop in most cases when they battle…but not this…And putting the DJs skills in front of the music IS EXACTLY WHAT BRINGS THE SCENE BACK . Just look at some of the handles and comments on this forum: “Tiesto 4 Life”, “Armin is god”, “Tiesto is king of EDM”, “Its all about Armin”…IOW they have put the DJ waaaay in front of the music…amateurs and newbs they might be…the rock star DJ they look up to…and playing in a big club environment or small doesn’t mean jack these days due to the way many event organizers, and promoters work ….hooking up people who do them favours, friends, etc. over talent (most couldn’t even recognize talent if their life depended on it)…Djs who cant even pick a genre or style these days and bouncing around like John Kerry...I’m not saying this is your case…but it is on the most part these days especially with some competitions who IGNORE THE UNIVERSE AVAILABLE, I’m not saying it specifically to this comp and congrats for running it and hope it goes well.…most of the great producers who have made great music and have played great musical sets are where they are today because of the music they play and/or make, they have almost always been one step ahead, not all are fantastic mixers or don’t even eq at all, but they certainly know what music to play, when to play, which style best suits them, etc…again people don’t go to see how well they can beatmatch or eq or whatever… "10 years from now vinyl will not be around" do you know who said that?, atleast that will be the case on the most part for EDM, maybe not hip hop. Will people and some competitions be ready for the change, evolution or remain stagnant and keep ignoring the universe, thus many talented DJs/producers out there?

Yup, it's fine basically what I'm looking for is if you can beatmatch or not, your track selection and the flow.

Good question, Yes I'm going to open it up to those who wish to use a hardware controller on their software as well. Keep in mind though that you will have to bring your set-up to the studio for a live set as we are only set up for CDs and Vinyl, that might be a bit hard.

Yes, Final skratch is fine as, like said above, you are still using the turntables or cds to manipulate the music. DJ Eso's hit the nail on the head. I will not accept DJs who put their mixes together using Acid, Virtual DJ, Traktor etc.. UNLESS they use a controller and not the mouse to hit the Sync button over and over again.

Another issue I want to address is the use of downloaded music. As a radio station we are monitored by SOCAN and other agencies that make sure that the music we play is properly licensed etc. When you buy vinyl the license fee to play that music publicly is factored into the price. So in theory you are allowed to play it on the radio as well. Same with promotional stuff that is sent to you, in most cases. I ask you, that if you do choose to play downloaded music make sure it's only music from legit download sites and that you have the information about the release handy as a playlist will be required, if you do end up spinning on the show. I know this might be a little too much but the red tape is just part of life.

From the demos I have received so far it will be hard to pick just three DJs so I will open up room for more DJs to come in and show off. Details on this to follow.

Once again thank you for your interest everyone.
