As much as I like seeing new blood at the top, I think it will be very difficult to knock Tiesto off the top of the rankings.
I agree that he's not artistically the most cutting edge anymore, nor is he the most technically proficient on the decks, but he does bring something that no other DJ in the world does: the ability to market outside of the usual dance crowd. I know the starving artists on this board are going to crucify me for this, but there is great deal more to djing than an ability to run turntables and pick music. This becomes even more evident with the transition to more digital and cd based djing. The Tiesto legion of fans is so large because people like my father, who would normally have nothing to do with EDM, like Tiesto because his sound incorporates elements of New Age and Classical, forms of music that obviously skew towards older markets.
I love Armin's mix disks (ASOT is brilliant), however, I've seen him live four times in the last couple of years and I would say that only one of the shows was above average. In a technical sense, Ferry blows everybody away, and I've never been disappointed by his live shows. At this point in his career, he's lacking the big stage presence and cross-over appeal that have taken Tiesto to the top. Are Ferry's shows crazy? Does the crowd go nuts? Yes, but they're all Ferry fans to begin with, and he could play almost anything and still get that reaction. Give Ferry a few more years though and he will be the man!
The Ultimate DJ experience: Tiesto's stage show + (old) Oakenfold's ability to choose music + Ferry's mixing abilities |
