| I understand what reverb does, i understand what delay does, etc etc etc... But what the hell is chorus (i noticed everyone uses it on their sounds)? When i try it it kinda doubles the sound or something, is this true and what are the benefits of applying chorus to your tracks? |

| Its like a delay effect of a couple miliseconds, so it makes the sound kinda fatter. I dont use it that often. |

| A chorus uses delays to artificially detune a sound. So I allows you to make one sawtooth sound like many. Some choruses use real pitchbend, while others use delays. |

Chorus does exactly what the name implies: it simulates a chorus of instruments.
When you have a brass section, for example, you don't have every instrument playing its note at exactly the same millisecond in time. Some musicians are going to be a bit late or early. So that's essentially what a chorus does - it gives that "ensemble" sound by outputting several copies of a waveform, each with very a small (but different) delay. |

So let me get this straight...
If I have a vocalist and I want her vocal to sound multi-timbered and phat, I can apply the Chorus effect with a tone change? Or do I have to ask her to actually sing the line an octave lower, and then overlay that new vocal?
What is a PROFESSIONAL, high-quality Chorus plugin? Because I'm guessing that Fruity Chorus isn't it ;) ? |

Well as good as the artificial chorus is, it will still sound artificial.
If you have a decent vocalist, it always pays off to ask him/her to sing the lines a couple of times over (not necessarily at another pitch, nobody, even the perfect singer can't sing two identical passes).
The vocalist must be good, because if his/her timing is too much off, you'll hear "slaps" of words, which isn't very nice. But with a good singer, he'll be pretty spot on each time. But there still be will slight differences in timing and pitch. And exactly those differences are what make it "big". Pan the different instances out to make it even more interesting.
Of course, you could also ask to sing harmonies (octave higher, lower, etc...) but that'll give another effect. Worth trying out though.
A lot of records use this trick to make larger than life vocals. Sometimes they have 10 or more layers of the same line, to create that "wall". |

Thanx for that reply. Is it correct to say, then, that in EVERY trance track, vocals are always beefed up with Chorus? In other words, nobody ever uses a single line? |

| Vocals are most of the time processed with many effects, whether it be chorus compression etc |

That is not correct. There's almost certainly some FX processing in most trance vocals, but not necessarily chorus. (Example: Oceanlab - Satellite) |
