hmmmz... this is really unexplainable and im also wondering if this has happened to anyone else.. and possible causes..?
i downloaded dirty - dirty from the singles page (which btw is a stomper) and somehow it managed to get up to 12mb a sec and got the whole tune in a second...
we thought that it could have possibly been already in my temporary files from when i tried it last... but the only time i tried to dl this none of the tunes were working (problem with servers i think)...
any ideas? |

| jeff its impossiable to get 12 megs /sec down a standard telephone line, thats why if u want anything faster than ISDN u have to have a seperate line installed just for it and all sorts, remember telephone lines were made for voice transfer, not ur ty tunes! lol! now stop trying to brag ur 56k, its ! muahah! :p |

| you can transfer a lot more than 56k through the phone line, without the need for a separate new line! look at dsl technology... |

Thats odd, cuz sometimes I have a similar sorta problem.
I only have a 28.8k  Everytime I start a new download it always starts at something like a 50kb p/sec, tyhen it falls til it gets to 3.75kb sec, cos thats the max my modem can cope with :p but for really long downloads, off servers, it occasionally rises up to 7kb per sec for some time then falls again! I'll be buggered if I knew what was causing it, cuz then I always keep it that high :D |

| I've never got anywhere near 12mb/sec :p But I have had some rediculously stupid xfers in the past, well above 56k. Dunno why this is.... the thing with 56k modems is they're not limited to 56k are they? Anyway, tis a mystery. Nice when it happens though. |

for DSL technology to be applicable there are few conditionz to be MET first...
distance to the CO
if the copper wire can HANDLE it
if the CO is wired for it
if the wire is enabled for it
[edit]
couple of other things
- data runs at a diff. frequency via dsl than the one normal dial up modems can handle...which in itself renders DSL traffic null via a normal 56K Analog modem.
- if perchance the data did get to the end of the wire and INTO the modem (which as said above is impossible), it can't go anywhere, due to the modem not being ABLE to HANDLE that much speed to begin with.
[/edit]
bleh..
12 MB/sec is not a possiblity...think you might have had a wet dream again ;) *joke damnit joke!* |

sorry.. i had too much something this morning.. don't mind me. :D | even if he had cable, there's no way he could have gotten 12mb/sec. i have cable, and that's laughable...
well, anyway, bet ya had dl'ed it before and forgot about it. |

When U start to download a file, paticuly a MP3 the download will appear to start off really Quickly, and that applies for whatever connection you are on.
The reason it starts so quickly is cos the 1st part of any file is called a header, that header contains the file information, type, length, date created, etc and is a few bytes, the download then goes to its proper speed when it gets to the "body" of the file.
unfortunately it's all an illusion and is not really downloading at super fast speeds.
Average for a good 56k connection will be 7 - 8k a second.
Tu_Face: The reason it appeared u got 12Mb in one second is cos all u managed to do was download the header of the file.
I would imagine that the file u downloaded wont play, and if it does, then it already existed on your hard drive.
Peace :)

when i had 56k, i noticed that the download would sometimes not start immediately on screen, but information was already being sent and received by me, despite the lack of acknowledgement from my computer. so, once my computer finally started to show me the status of my dl, for a brief moment it would write outrageous speeds and that i had dled an amazing amount in a short time. to catch up with the actual info i had already received. though, shortly after that, the speeds would drop to ordinary levels and would once again commence the painul speeds of a 56k. maybe you wouldnt looking at your dl for some time and when you returned you saw those numbers, even though it had actually taken probably 45 minutes? i dont know your situation sounds very extreme.
wicked neo - you made me look like an ass lol just posted before me :) |
