During final exam week in my last year of university (Elec Eng), I think I was up for about 2½ days. I probably would have been better off with drugs, but it was actually just an assload of coffee and several double espressos.

Now I'm lucky if I can stay up 2 hours after the first yawn comes. I'll take sleep over CoZo any Sunday of the year.

does this mean that you are cranky anytime you are awake?

you need 24 hours of sleep a day?

I went ~96 hours... with about.. 8 hours of sleep interspersed throughout that time. But the longest I've gone without shutting my eyes... probably 45 hours

I heard somewhere once that 7 days is the most you can go ... then you die???

what about those unfortunate few with chronic insomnia?

I've never had much problem sleeping. I either walk a lot during the day to various places, or I'm so tired mentally from school. I think the longest I've gone is about 30-36 hours a few times...but then I end having a marathon 18 hour sleep session. It's horrible on your heart, brain and immune system.

and god it was fun

i hope the canadian public doesn't hold this against me in 30 years

:nervous: :nervous:

The world record is like 11 days. And yes... I could feel myself breathing and my heart beating near the end of it.

11 days? damn...that's something few people could do. I feel like if I don't get 8-9 hours of daily sleep so ugh..:nervous:

several times I've pushed it to the absolute limit:

1st time :
year 1 of engineering at mac. Up for 3 straight days, drank a crapload of coffee, and it caught up to me quickly and my work suffered. The more I stayed up, the less productive I became, and then was forced to stay up later, etc....judgement really does go hand in hand with sleep, and lack of sleep is a bad idea. I was running on so much adrenaline by the end I couldn't get to sleep, and a girl on my floor gave me some melatonin sleeping pills, doubling the doseage figuring I was 'a big guy'. 45 mins alter, I could barely lift my math textbook back to my room to get to bed. Went to sleep in the coma position, didn't wake up from that night till morning the second day afterward. My roomate had thought I'd literally died, but my body just completely shut down and I couldn't wake myself. Worst thing was having to go to the bathroom immediately upon regaining consiousness.

2nd time:
year 2 engineering physics, during the midterm time around thanksgiving. I had 5 midterms, 6 assignments, and 3 labs in 10 days totalling very significant portions of my marks on a number of courses. Had 3 hours sleep in 5 days, with only 3 full meals to go along with it. The extreme lack of sleep and food caused me to fail a couple of the midterms, without question. By the end, I was hallucinating, flat out hallucinating to the point where I saw 'underpants gnomes' from a specific south park episode. I even started singing the corresponding song that went along with that episode, and was in uncontrollable fits of laughter because I was literally losing my mind. The entire week following, my housemates stole some of my underwear and hung it from the ceiling of the living room to emphasize how crazy I became. No sleeping pills were necessary after that bout with insomnia though.

you're lucky! although i'm by no means a chronic insomniac, i cannot turn off my brain at night, therefore i rarely get enough sleep until the weekend. then i can't sleep on sunday night cos i overslept on the weekend. and i walk TONS. it's just not fair...
