[REVIEW] Sasha at Ice, Las Vegas, October 29

the last time i saw sasha was at the fundacion residency he had in ny, all the way back in june. needless to say, i was really excited to be here in vegas to see sasha. he duly ROCKED it! he threw down a little bit of everything, including the kitchen sink! james lavelle was also in the dj booth with sasha. i got to talk to them both a bit at the side of the booth, kind of selfishly, asking each of them separately when they'd be back in new york, sasha especially to hopefully renew fundacion. i didn't recognize too much that was dropped, except for the following

amoeba assassin - la abba
unkle - in a state (sasha's remix)
there were other tracks too but i'm not too sure about their names.

thanks very much to shafer8 for getting my name down for the vip list. was a bit disappointed that they didn't hand us any of the drink vouchers, but that didn't really take away from the night. ice is one sweet sweet venue and the next time i'm in vegas and there's a top notch dj there, i'd definitely go again. lighting, sound system, the layout of the entire place worked. i haven't seen a crowd this amped in a while (in ny, the crowds have just been really blah lately).

i'll post up pictures at some point of my night there. i have a LOT.

sorry i didn't get to meet anyone :( i never got a chance to browse through the forum for pictures of you guys.

SASHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111

Its been way too long!

Let me start off by saying ICE is an impeccable club, from the gorgeous 4 point Funktion One system, to the decor/lighting and the coolest thing, the cyro smoke. The staff were very proffesional and friendly, this being my second time there after felix the night before. The crowd was a nice mix of all sorts of people...there's no stereotype for it besides diverse...unlike our clubs in LA.

OMG this was by far my favorite clubbing experience of 2005. Even though Mark Tabbener SUCKS ASS...worse trackselection ever, horrible mixing...and the damn Tiesto In Concert ads on the screens in the beggining...in buzzkill! I secured myself a spot on the stairs next to the right side of the DJ booth...about 2ft from Sasha's mac and Maven controller, at eyhe level with him.

Finally, around 1:15 he arrives...everyone is screaming SASHA! We're all trying to say hi or get a hand shake somehow...Sasha signs a few autographs, including this one guy who brought practivally Sasha's entire discography (Vynils/CDs/Vynil Packs) and a t-shirt which several DJ's had signed...and sasha had no problem signing every single one of them!

I got to give him a high five...which was awesome...I love Sasha's presence...when you are around him you are around a living legend...the knowledge and abality he has are matched by few...

This would be proven to us over the next 4 hours after a stellar intro track.

BUT HE WRECKED! The first mix, I guess the track had not been warped properly, or the launch mode was incorrect, because as soon as he triggered it it was totally off and he quickly smashed in the next track...

But this was THE ONLY FLAW the ENTIRE 4 hours. After that cock-up Sasha wasted no time getting the floor moving...no proggy first half hour here...just right into SICK basslines, sick tracks, and sick melodies...very experimental sound which I could not really categorize...but we only recognized a few tracks the entire night...I'd say 85% of the stuff was completely new to me, which is why I love Sasha. Some of these unknowns were absolutely MASSIVE tunes, ING MASSIVE!

In no time Sasha had the crowd eating out of his hand and was starting to find his groove. I watched him mix closely and was really amazed...he knows exactly what he is doing and is just magical on that controller. The builds/breakdowns he created or looped or added effects to (sometimes all 3) were mind blowing.

Being able to watch my idol work up close was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced...Sasha's stage presence is amazing...he just barely starts dancing and you can tell hes in it already...but above all that he is 110% into the music he is playing...and he delivers mixes that are just gorgeous.

The way he worked the crowd was only the mark of a true veteran who knows what the hes doing (take notes Tiesto).

The tracks he played were hard, bangin and dirty, with some dark stuff here and there and electro/minimal/acid/progressive elements scattered around and mashed together.

At one point Sasha had elements from four different tracks going in live...the way he manages to layer sounds and put tracks that normally wouldnt seem right together WORK is the reason why he is God in my eyes. The man has so much talent.

Here are a few tracks I recognized...

Fred Everything & 20for7 - Friday (Trentemoller Remix)

in which he let the bassline from the previous track play under it which sounded awesome.

PRYDA - AFTERMATH

OMFG...I loved this track, but SASHA MAKES IT SOUND ING AMAZING! The effects he adds during builds send you to another world...as if this track needed any help destroying a dance floor...ICE went nuts during this!

Silver City - Shiver (Ewan Pearson's Bari Girl Remix)

Another new Ewan Pearson remix that is just massive...nice deep bassline and trippy little bopy melody over it...with a few electro elements...I was just telling Tigo "Oh I got this new Ewan Pearson...sick track, I'm totally in love with it...hey that would be crazy if sasha plays this lol"

Lo and behold..

I went CRAZY! :D

He also played Tim Deluxe - Reflections, and I think bas caught a few more ID's.

In all an amazing night...I loved every minute, towards the middle untill the end Sasha was totally into it, smiling and doing little dances and just making crazier and crazier mixes...it was just in awesome.

Sasha played no filler tracks, each track was massive, and the set was put together beautifully...

AND SOMEONE ID THE OPENING TRACK IT ING OWNS!

Boomar will post some pics soon :)

Sasha is still my #1 and likely wont move from that spot for awhile...

yea I bet! ICE is a pretty cosy club. I never thought I would say this but here we go: Looking back at this year and what Sasha did(in term of dj, production and stylistic growth) I think he should have been #1 not PVD

nice review Clovis.
Glad you guys had a great time.

This was definatly an amazing night ...sasha rocked it as usually btw the Intro track that sasha droped was a Old Bedrock track Salt Tank - Energy. You see Ableton at times had a few skips here and there i think in time that program will become more stable. Sasha last 2 hours just tore it up!!
