i'm freakin baffled man...i've used an echo mia midi, an m-audio audiofile firewire...and an m-audio 2496 (don't worry, i didn't go out and buy them all just because of this problem)...but anyways, no matter what i use i can't freakin record an audio signal, what the hell? what am i missing.
i'm aware that professional audio cards overwrite the windows mixer, so the record feature becomes greyed out in the audio record options in the windows mixer (so when i switch to onboard sound i can record stuff) but what am i missing to do that is not allowing me to record in real time. An example, i have the cubase sx sequencer open and have created a midi track, and i'll create an audio track and hit record in hopes to convert it to wav., but it flat lines.
i very strongly appreciate anyone who can help me on this problem so i don't feel like such a noobie anymore. thanks
ps. i've fiddled around with the settings in the included mixer for the soundcards with no luck. |

If you're trying to record your midi track to audio why don't you just export it to audio instead. Solo the midi track and go to File > Export > Audio Mixdown, and do it that way. If you're trying to record a midi track to audio through your soundcard you're going to have to route the output from your soundcard back into an input of your soundcard, and that's a lot more work than you really need to do.
By the way, I've been drinking tonight, so if this doesn't make sense I appologize. |

no i know, that makes sense, i've been exporting it to audio anyways right now...maybe not the best example i gave. even pretend i wanted to record streaming audio from the internet into a wav editor for example, why can't i do it right now?
thanks |

| you should try Ableton...the routing system is quite easy to learn...activate the inputs in preferences menu and you are ready to go.in Cubase basiclly is the same thing but the menu bar is slightly different. |

| i don't see your problem.. i had the audiophile 2496 and it worked very well with cubase sx2 and sx3. just create a midi track for the synth (select the right midi output) then create a audio channel and select the right synth.. with cubase sx3.1 you need only to add the synth to the "external synths" in the options and you can insert it like any other VSTi. (cubase does then automatically the routing) |

I'm using an audiophile 2496 and just tried to record a stream and works like a charm. Did you route everything right in the M-Audio Control Panel. Look in the tab Patchbay/Router.

| Sorry, don't have an audiophile, but like has been mentioned this sounds like a soundcard setup issue, not an issue with cubase. |
