For £1000 you can get a pretty decent PC.
Tell us about your experience and what needs you have. |

I'll tell you what NOT to buy at this moment:
A motherboard with a nForce4 chipset. These boards have PCI-e slots for graphic cards instead of AGP. AGP is slowly disappearing.
Due to some faults on these boards they choke up all available bandwith leaving none for your PCI soundcard. This will send your CPU to 100% sooner than you would wish for. Even at lower CPU usage you'll get some pops and crackle which shouldn't be there. This is for both AMD as Intel platforms. The bigger/better the graphic card, the more it'll hog the bus. The problem seems to be non-existant with AMD dual-core or nForce4 Pro boards. Anyway AMD and Nvidia acknowledged this problem and because the problem doesn't exist on the Pro version (Socket 940/Opteron) of the boards they think it can be fixed through a bios update. Still no sign tho.
That's it in a nutshell, do a google search if you want to know more and just steer clear from these boards for now, unless you're considering dual-core.

I'd just buy a decent pc, maybe a pentium, then you can switch to mac software anyways if you want (soon).
I prefer my pc over any mac though :) |

For that you could get a really decent setup and have some left over to go hire a prostitute for a few days (depending on the area you live).
3GHz cpu
2gig of RAM
prO sound card
all the rest
Won't go into makes and models.

why not go into makes and models? thats the most important bit :O
if you use logic then i guess there isnt really much of a choice - go with a mac. you could still use logic 5.5 on pc though but mac users say theirs is the more stable platform. i dont know - ive never used a mac.
for PCs, broadly intel cpus are slightly better at multi tasking and multi threaded apps. AMDs are slightly better at single threaded apps and gaming performance. any value RAM from a reputable brand like corsair is the way to go at stock speeds. the top end RAM from companies like kingston or corsair is only really useful if you want to overclock.
audio interface wise, it depends on what you want to use it for.
emu 1616m has gotten pretty rave reviews for a mobile interface, has tonnes of audio ins/outs, proper aes/ebu digital outs, 120 db signal to noise ratio and some monster pre amps but it'll cost 1/3rd of your budget at £350. you need to get some kind of PCMCIA adaptor though if you want to use it in your desktop pc but those are pretty cheap.
for a 10 in 10 out PCI audio interface the ESI ESP1010 is really good. its better than my delta 1010, costs about the same (£250) and the driver support is really really good.
if you do loads of recording from mics and guitars then a presonus firepod is pretty good since it has loads of preamps on it. also 10 in, 10 out but its £400+
