I'm not buyin' it.

This was Harry Reid's reaction to the nomination of Alito (Whom I know little about at this point, other than he looks like the consummate dork)...

quote:
"The nomination of Judge Alito requires an especially long, hard look by the Senate because of what happened last week to Harriet Miers. Conservative activists forced Miers to withdraw from consideration for this same Supreme Court seat because she was not radical enough for them. Now the Senate needs to find out if the man replacing Miers is too radical for the American people." _ Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Forgive me for calling bull, Harry old buddy old pal, but the reason Miers withdrew was because everyone and their mother knew that she was grossly unqualified for the job at hand. I don't think her personal views were even on the table at the point of withdrawal.

I think he's got a bit of a point. While she was underqualified, her withdrawal was definitely aided by conservatives not supporting her either because they didn't know if she has the same strong conservative ideals that they hold. I think Bush made the Alito selection because he's the opposite of what she was, experienced and seemingly very conservative.

I like how the supporters of Alito are touting how experienced he is, but not mentioning how often his opinions have been in the minority on issues that are sure to come up in his term (the PA abortion case, the Santa with the religious figures church/state case)

Another point to note on this selection is that Bush could have let O'Connor in for the remainder of the term (she offered), but chose not to because his goal is not to maintain the current standards, but to get HIS court to set new ones.

Anyone else find it funny that Bush gets to pick the heads of the legal branch of government while his own staff gets gutted by their own legal problems.

That may have had a little something to do with the reaction of the whignuts on the right who attacked her like a wolf at a carcass before she could even speak for herself.

They have gotten what they wanted now and will still bitch about something new. I for one am willing to see what this guy is all about at his hearings, as I believe that is what Harry Reid has suggested, unlike the attacks leveled at Miers from rightwingers. I have contended that it will take a drastic reversal of a standing law against i.e. Abortion for people to finally wake up to reality, the sooner the better.

Many conservatives who love to envoke religion seems to have forgotten one of the founding fathers major principles, separation of church and state, I think we now see why that was so important.
