Yes,yes it is.
I mean,I bought some vinyl decks,and I do buy vinyl,but because of that I am a 19 year old who has no proof of ID when I go out on a night because I have not got the money to send off for my provisional liscence because all my money goes on vinyl.
Yet my collection is still small :(
So yes,it is cheaper.

Seriously, CD-Js will save you alot of money in the long run. As someone pointed out, vinyls are expensive and its easy to get addicted to buying them. Conversely, internet mp3 shops offer songs for a fraction of the cost and can be burned to CD-R, a relatively cheap media. If you do get turntables, a good way to keep yourself in with money for vinyls is to play the vinyl releases like the stock market.
Id recommend CDJ 1000s and a DJM mixer of your choice, which will be a nice setup with enough bells and whistle to keep you full of things to learn for a while as you perfect your techniques and define your style. If you get vinyl decks, the debate is endless on which is better and Im not willing to start this battle. However, I will note that a good stylus is important too, especially when you start to play out in public. Don't skimp when replacing this part. Also, read your manual, and check a book out of the library on repairing your turntables; it will be worth having some background knowledge if you plan on keeping your setup in good shape. In either case, a dDJ setup will cost you over 1000 Dollars (US). If you want a less quality setup to learn on, I recommend low-tier Geminis. These have good resale value for some unknown reason.
As far as where to get vinyl, online record shops usually give you the best selection; however, dont skimp on your local shops, you can ocassionally find incredible deals in the bins there and expose yourself to music youd never heard otherwise.
To keep my vinyl in shape, I use a bowling ball rag and a cleanser meant for the purpose, which keeps the surfaces nice and polished.
The headphone on one ear is so you can hear the song that is playing on the speakers, for the audience, and the one you want to mix in. This is know as beatmatching and is very easy to do in genres like trance. You can think of this as simply matching the kick drum (boom boom boom) up in both songs. This is a good technique to have when playing club type music, but can also be one of thoe most frustrating to learn.
