Gomery Report (part 1)

well...none of the Martin bashers will post anything, so I figured I'd start this baby up ;)

I (obviously) haven't read the report...though I did listen to Mr. Gomery's live statement this morning and have flipped through media reports.

Ultimately, the inquiry has FULLY EXONERATED Paul Martin from the events of the sponsorship and ad scandals, both while serving as Finance Minister and as PM. Gagliano has been directly implicated and Chretien has been deemed responsible, though not directly connected. Various more 'minor' Liberal party workers have been directly implicated as well, of course.

It will be interesting to see what political fallout the Liberal Party suffers...Martin can apparently now spin this by stating that this was the work of the previous administration, that he himself called for the inquiry, that safeguards will be put in place (part 2 of Gomery's mandate is to advise on that), etc. etc. etc.

The opposition will likely spin it that the Liberal Party, regardless of Martin's lack of knowlegde and involvement, should be punished and no longer in power.

I don't think any of the Liberals, Conservatives or NDP want an election now (for various reasons), with only the Bloq wanting one (since their only real challenge in Quebec is the Liberals) and are calling for an opposition day NOW instead of mid-Nov (as no one wants a Christmas election).

interesting...

I don't think anyone that follows politics or this story would be surprised by this. I'm sure a lot of people that were/are hoping for a conservative government won't be happy but certainly they cannot be surprised. Now we get to sit back and watch the spin... which is always the most interesting part of politics. Ultimately, this report and the second to follow won't make much if any difference in the forthcoming election.... people have already made up their minds and those that hate the Liberals and Mr. Martin will continue to do so, those that gave Martin the benefit of the doubt will vote for the Liberals again (the only possible difference is that those that vote Liberal may feel more comfortable in doing so).

Martin was on Corner Gas last night...

although it was funny, funny how if he is in all this trouble he has time to be on a comedy show....

The Liberals will definitely take a hit in Quebec for this. Though Charest don't have to call a provincial election until 08.
But bye bye federal MP seats, Liberals.

This would actually be a good time for Conservatives to try to get back into Quebec, but Harper don't have a clue how francophones think and want, so they'll lose that chance.

-Conservatives and Bloc wants the elections, not the NDP.

-Paul Martin is not fully exonerated, because the caucus was blamed in the report, which Martin was part of.

Conservatives could score better in Québec if they push their ideas of more autonmy and power (i.e. $$$) to provinces... they just need to articulate the idea better than they did the last time.

I'll reserve any specific comments until I've read the full report (which I intend to do).

However, I don't see how it makes any difference whether or not Martin was personally involved - the fact is that this is reflective of a much larger problem with the LPC, and AdScam is just one of many scandals that they've been through. It doesn't seem to matter who's actually in charge - they're always rife with scandal, they have been for the past 10 years.

I havn't read the report as of yet, but will begin reading very shortly. I tried to stay away from all media about this issue, because as I have said before, I don't believe that we can always trust the media in full with what they present us. At the same time, who knows if we can really trust the Gomery report to begin with...

Before I read the report I do have to state that I feel that there is no way, with Martin being the Finance Minister at the time, that he didn't have something to do with the scandal. If nothing else, he knew it was going on and did nothing about it; which makes him equally to blame as anybody else.

In my opinion, the Liberals have had power for too long in this country and we need to see a shift in that power. It seems that the Liberal party is an old boys club, with deep roots in Quebec, and is fairly corrupt. I feel personally with such corruption at the present time, that they are morally unfit to govern this country. If we see another party get elected and keep a term for more than 4 years, we may see a reform in the Liberal government, that *could* put them in a better place to govern again.

I do give Martin credit for saying he will call an election 30 days after the final report (now due Feb 1st, instead of Dec. 15th). At least he is willing to let us make a decision based on the report.

That's all from me for now...I'm sure DIGINUT will be here any second to flame me again.:whip: Off to read the report.

Why would I flame you for that... the LPC has been involved in a different multi-billion dollar scandal every year, all of which are well-documented. They most certainly do need some time to "cool off".
