Eviscerating the vocal in a remix of a pop song can sometimes get you into a lot of trouble. We're talking Mottola on your ass trouble. But if you get away with it, you're Andy Moor. On the Leama + Moor dub mix of Britney Spears' “Someday” (the song about her baby) Brit's vocals are mercifully diminished and replaced by some bass and much needed rearrangement. As the youngest DJ in DJMag's Top 100 (at age 25 he entered the charts this year at #46), Moor is a bit of a control freak, but that's not such a bad thing. He comes to Bleu Detroit on Friday, December 2nd.

Moor's treatment of “Someday” saw a release on the official single in most of the world, making Moor practically celeb DJ. Well, not really. But the risks he took with Britney's song are typical of his DJing style. Before Moor plays a track, he drags it into the studio to edit it to his specifications. No out of the box spinning for this DJ. If you still doubt the seriousness of his craft, Moor will soon have his own self-designed fx software on display at live shows, and possibly available for purchase. With this new technology Moor can manipulate the track and mix live while concurrently mixing on CDJs and turntables. It's terribly complicated but so edgy.

Moor is a live DJ in that what he plays is spontaneous and reflective of his mood and the crowd. Yes, every DJ says that, but with Moor he can do more than put on a different record… he can make the record that's on different.

As world-renowned trance DJ Tiesto pumped high-energy life into the State Theatre over Thanksgiving, a young 18 year old was seeing one of his musical heroes for just his second time. He also happened to be spinning records himself in the lobby. “I was into hip-hop and all that stuff … I used to listen to DJ Skribble and I was really into 93.1 DRQ where I listened to Mike Scroggs and DJ Assault. I was really into all that booty stuff and then I heard Tiesto and those guys and now that’s all I listen to, pretty much all the time.”

The 18 year old is DJ Elevation, and though most kids his age are going to college (which he does), Elevation is also creating a big-time buzz in the often-misunderstood trance world. It’s all happened pretty fast for the classically trained musician who is not only well-studied in music but also savvy enough to get his tracks heard by the greats in the game. “What happened was during the Armin van Buuren radio show State of Trance, in the Armin chat-room, I saw Markus Schulz in there … I recognized his name,” Elevation explained. “I started talking to him, and many months later sent something to him and we ended up finishing it together and it ended up doing really well.”

The track originally called “Clear Blue Sky” got Elevation into the mix with Schulz and soon the progressive trance record became “Clear Blue” and was released to wide success through Armada Music’s Electronic Elements. With regular rotation inside Detroit’s Bleu and more producing collaborations including work with DJ Kenneth Thomas, Elevation has a lot on his plate, including homework. “My goal is to play [the Winter Music Conference] in Miami, and for sure I’m playing in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Vegas in the next couple months,” Elevation said. “Detroit is a decent place to start out, not real big on trance but I just wanna continue to develop my DJ skills and build a following … If you can get that one person who rocks out the whole night for the whole gig and they keep coming, eventually you’re gonna get that following.” | RDW
