Contractors then go so low in an attempt to outbid their rivals to get the deal, it doesnt cover the actual cost of the construction. They only announce 3/4 of the way through that theyre not going to be on budget, and need more cash. That way they win the contract, and they're so far into it, the customer won't pull out, and they'll come to a comprimise.

So the whole thing would have probably cost £100m more than quoted, so if they had said that none of this "it needs more money" would have came about, but if they quoted 100m more, chances are someone else would have just done what they did.

actually, one of the main reasons for the increase in cost was due to their being a fall out with one of the steel contractors. They've now been dropped and a replacement company has been brought in. however, a set price on steel hasn't been agreed yet and due to a world increase in the price of steel, the cost is continuing to rise. the original steel contractor is currently in court now (i think)..

I think the arch is a nice archilogical design as well as being genius!
It may not have the tradition of the twin towers, but times move on. in 100 years when we're all dead people will be saying " why are they knocking down the arch, thats english footballs tradition "
