I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet....
When ur looking at using a laptop for audio use, it is EXTREMELY important that you get a good brand. Why? LAPTOPS MAKE (ground?) NOISE when plugged into the AC. And lets face it, if your CPU is running hard ur not gonna want to run off battery alone lol. It's something to do with all the components using a common ground and how the power comes through the distributor or something. I'm not all that technical, but I know it is an issue. You get a slight hum come through, and when you move the mouse etc. you'll hear little scratchy noises :D
The reason alot of DJs use macs is cause they dont generate any of this noise. Apple have actually seen this as a problem and have put in ground loop isolators and . Lets face it, most computer manufacturers arent sound technicians :P
Dell are terrible, google will tell u that straight away. Toshiba is just about the best you can get in a PC laptop. Although I love ASUS, w5's are sexual, i'm pretty sure they have been known to have alot of problems too. Acer is also , but i wouldnt touch acer anyways :P
Most generic brand BTO/Barebones type laptops will suffer from this problem really bady. Although, I bought a Clevo M540G base unit and built it up, doesnt seem to have any noise at all through my firewire box. Maybe look into one of those if you like, that way you can customise the hard drive (7,200rpm instead of that 4,200rpm bs), more ram, faster cpu, etc.
There are ways around this problem if you get it, but theyre pretty dodgy. Like, removing the earth pin from your powersupply (lol). You can also ground your computer to something else, or ground the soundcard to your computer chasis blah blah blah but thats all very inconvienient.
You'll have this problem regardless of the type of interface you're using too, be it PCMCIA, firewire, or usb. Although PC cards and firewire seem to be much less of a problem than USB (perhaps the bus power on the usb doesnt do some filtering that the others do?) |

No because its external, and i know fs2 is externally powered, and i would imagine serato is as well. |

Believe it or not, Serato works fine on 256mo of ram.
BTW, the software uses USB. Everything is digital therefore I doubt there is noise like analog signal. |

just because its digital dosent mean there wont be ground loops, however one would hope that serato is well enough designed to combat such a problem |

for DJing a 12" would be fine, but you would probably want to buy some more RAM from a 3rd party (cheaper than apple's upgrades). i have a 15" and i added 1 gb to get it up to 1.5 gb. now my powerbook runs like a dream.
then again, if you're willing to wait and save up a few hundred more dollars, the 15" is faster, has a considerably bigger display (obviously), has a bigger hard drive, and most importantly...the keyboard lights up. :tongue2
in summary: i'd save up and get the 15". it's totally worth it. |
