cd burning

recently i found a controversial point about burning cds:

which speed sould be chossen?

glass masters are made under 4x for reduce the probability of errors during the process , i think that when it comes to burning with the pc it must be similar. but the fact of the matter is that it was said in the "red book" wich was written in early 80's!!! (and seems that they haven't updated it since that decade). now i would like to know if there is a significant difference when burning at higher speed.

anyone knows about this?

From what I've learned at work, high speed discs (both CD and DVDs) achieve their speed by using a thinner and more sensitive data layer. This is the most likely cause of errors because there is less room for a laser to write (and read) the data.
Burning at high speeds also leaves your disc prone to physical inaccuracies too....so a combination of these puts valuable recordings at risk. High speed burning is only recommended for brainless music discs that you'll trash about in your car.

For your masters and archives I recommend using professional-grade discs and burn at a low-ish speed (8-16x)

What's anyone else's opinions?

Professionally-released discs are "stamped", not "burned" at all, so there is really no speed associated with it. It takes some time to prepare the mask, but afterwards it takes maybe a few seconds to stamp it.

For archival purposes I would seriously recommend against using CDs at all. MAKE BACKUPS!

that was my mistake.
glass master is CUT at 1x - 4x. from that, a stamper is created and then the discs are formed.

thanks dude

but the point of the question keeps still

anyone else?

I always record the masters I send to the label in 4x because when you record at a high speed you will find litle errors *cut offs* and *Jumps*.
Kopi =o.
