| Pronounced "pha". Tripe, brisket, tendon, and chili sauce. |

My Viet friends pronounce it the same as fur (but with a silent R as pronounced in england/aus).
These days sliced rare beef, brisket, tendon, tripe, blood, various meatballs and sausages etc... can be added in any combination or not added at all (if you're a weirdo).Though traditionally some form of beef has been included, these days you can get chicken, vegetarian or even seafood pho at some places. The only essential ingredients seem to be the broth and the rice noodles (although some places now offer the option of egg noodles too!).
Usually fresh sliced chilli, bean sprouts, lemon and vietnamese basil (or mint), are also provided on a separate plate to be added according to taste. I usually also chuck in whatever chilli sauce they've got sitting on the table too :P . |

this is what i usually put in my bowl ..
and these are just the condiments .. and you spell hoisin with one word, not two ..
and i usually order either the seafood (octopus, tendon, squid) or chicken .. not really a beef person ..
and i usually order this as a side dish, when i have company ..

im viet and the closests you can explain saying it is like:
Pha as in ""
there is an accent however, when you pronouce the "uh" the pitch goes up from a "uh" to "ah."
Practice a couple times then speed it up and youll be able to pronouce it properly! Though its healthier than most foods for the price of $5, i would refrain from eating it at a restaurant a lot because some places use MSG in the broth which is like a preservative. NOT HEALTHY!
but nonetheless, its so good so who cares. |
