Two young algerians in some bad neighbourhood were being chased by cops and they locked themselves in a power transformer.
Thing caught on fire they both died now the whole ghetto around that area is pissed and want all the cops dead.
That's pretty much it in regards to the event but there's been such a big buildup of frustration between people from the poorer areas cause one of the ministers Nicolas Sarkozy has been a bit of a lately saying things like these neighbourhood should be washed down with Karcher high pressure washers ( eliminating all the foreigners was the interpretation of what he said ).
End of story. |

Chirac has been worthless ever since he was hospitalized not long ago. As a matter of fact he's been worthless and hated for a while now. |

| Are Algerians a big minority in France still? I heard not too long ago that they are similar to Mexicans in the United States: Rapidly becoming a big and thus important part of the population. I knew the basic story behind it, but at some point, youve got to declare martial law.... |

algerians are what you could compare to the Mexicans in the US but on a smaller scale and much less organized.
In the US you have spanish speaking tv stations etc and all that spanish speaking market but that's nearly non existent here.
A lot of the people are actually 2nd or 3rd generation born in France but in the wake of the Islamic revival worldwide there's an upstream of conversions and a feeling of need of returns to the roots from the youth.
I am seeing way more girls covering their heads today then I ever did before and a lot of the religious push is coming from a feeling of neglect from society here due to rampant racism.
The french don't openly admit it but they are not open to outsiders ( at least much less open then in the US ) and a lot of that younger arabic population generation is unemployed with poor education ( school is real tough here ).
The french do have one or two semi-openly racist political parties that aren't particularly succesful but in the last election due to 8 or so people running for presidency sometimes from the same party it resulted in Chirac running against Jean Marie le Pen who is the leader of the National Front which is the main racist party. |

| this seems extremely similar to the riots in Los Angeles in 1992. An asian storekeeper shot a black girl she thought was stealing, and then only got probation as a sentence, and the entire black ghetto went crazy. They burned entire blocks of the poorer parts of LA and openly looted the stores (which was ironic b/c these were the parts of the city owned by themselves). It didn't help that Rodney King was only a few months before this. |

| Im not too familiar with current Algerian & French relations so excuse my ignorance. But I thought Algeria kicked France out like 50 years ago to gain thier own independence. Why are Algerians migrating to France. Its not like they are next door neighbors like U.S. & Mexico. |

| well for years, the gov't ahss been ignoring the situation of immigrants, poverty, unemployment, racism, etc., and now its finally blown up in their faces. im glad it has. and now what started out as two boys getting electrocuted because they were hiding in some electrical curcuit thing from the police, has spread to bordeaux, strassbourg, and more suburbs of parus. |
