what'd they do to the layout? Anything different really? And how is this DJ booth done *more professionally*? I need details, you have no idea how much I was itching to see the place.

The bad news is that this year's installment of SBB's personally ranks at the bottom of the five I've attended. Be that as it may...But the good news is It still fookin' rawked, mon!

My major bone-of-contention was the inclusion of Junior Sanchez. Spun some pretty interesting tracks (notably the mash-up of The Killerz and The Clash), but overall I found his set to be out-of-place, both in terms of style and technical skillz. Woulda been better off having his set either before Hodges or after Sneak...It just sabotaged the flow.

But even in spite of that, I was soft-shoe shufflin' all night long. Farina's set stood out for me - Typically jazz-tinged house, but with alot more oompf...Real ballsy mix...Hodges and b-day boy Sneak also delivered...Jason dropping Phil Week's remix of Farina's "Radio" was killer and ensured that the dancefloor would remain packed from there on in.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, the renovations done in 270 Spadina are something to behold...Makes the former Boa space look like the rathole I always claimed it to be...But some of the changes I found to be counter-productive...Moving the DJ booth further towards the centre seemed alright to start, but it quickly became apparent that it restricted dancing room considerably (especially when you consider those crazy stairs/steps)...Oh, the sound?...pfft..not even close...but I'm sure the real system will be an altogether different matter...I'm very optomistic for the club's potential.

Wasn't feeling much of what was goin' on downstairs, but I wasn't there for any significant amount of time to justify any criticism. I'll also note that the club opened 45 minutes later than scheduled, so even tho we arrived at 10:25, my friend Laura has the dubious distinction of being the new club's first patron. :)

I was thoroughly impressed with this event and the club itself. I think Carey and his team have improved the look and feel of the club.

Compared to last year, I thought Farina played a little bit of a dissapointing set. Junior Sanchez came on and played some fun beats though, including Daft Punk - Around the World and closing with The Killers - Mr Brightside. Sneak KILLED it! He played all 3 of the songs I wanted to hear from his Essential Mix. He was getting so dirty by the end of it.

Fun times at the Zone afterward with everyone. I wish more people came and stayed. Thanks to Josh for letting us chill at his place afterward. Tony Island was a blast.

About 270:

A few improvements:

- The DJ booth really does seem like it's in the middle of the dance floor now since the back has been opened up a lot (the areas on the sides where the beanbags were have been completely removed).

- The back of the club behind the DJ booth has been greatly improved, with carpeted floors, more room to chill or dance without having to have your eyes glued to the DJ. This aspect really gives the place more of a "party" vibe than a "concert" vibe because people are just forming their own mini dance circles.

- The sound. This is not yet better than the old Boa's, but if what I heard on Saturday night was just the begining, I can't wait to hear what the finished product sounds like.

A shortfalls:

- No metal detector. I think this should be put back in. As a clubber, it makes me feel a lot safer having to walk through a metal detector before entering a club.

- Shady bathroom attendants. I had an unpleasent experience with a bathroom attendant that I hope gets resolved.

First, I wanted to thank Sneak for deciding to host his B-day at 270 Spadina!

Second, I want to thank everyone who supported the event. From the day Boa opened to date this was the most well attended event in the space barring 3 or 4 events from 2004.

I also want to thank Shorty for doing such a great job EQing the rental rig. He did a great job with what he had. I personally found the bottom end to be far warmer and a lot more intense than the previous rig. For those who are curious, there were 16 custom J61 cabinets with double 18's for sub base. On the high range, there definitely was not the same sizzle that the previous rig had...but again this was a rental and we did not have the 4 tweeter packs hanging from the cieling. Also, the top mid range, and high end came from a single Clare Brother S4 box which houses 2 double 18's, 4 10" horns, 2 2" horns, and 2 tweeter bullets. These are the exact same speakers that Madonna, U2, and Britney Spears took on there last concert tour...hence they are meant more for live and rock and roll. The permanent rig recently named "The Beast" is going to blow you all away...I have seen the plans and no expense is being spared! :-)

Also, keep in mind that this is just an event space...next weeks event will boast more decor and lighting that will help bring the room to life!

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to take any pics as I was really busy...but I will do my best to take some this weekend.

See you all soon,

CB

Since Morales and Shorty are dealing with the sound for that place is it safe to assume that it'll be a purely anolog rig like stereo has? And 'No expense spared' sounds a lot like stereo's system requirements as well. I'm really curious about this because by far, stereo has the best sound I have ever heard, and the bass off that system is so warm and clean it can give you goosebumps, if this type of setup is to be in toronto, I believe you when you say 'the next level'.

Definately a nice surprise to my Saturday night. After originally intending to just hit up Boa, we decided to come to 270 and I was not dissapointed. I had forgotten what a unique atmosphere there is in this club and was totally reminded of it as soon as I got there.

I agree that Farina was a bit of a dissapointment, but I was very impressed with Junior Sanchez. Highlight of the night for sure was Daft Punk-Around the World, I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to that song the same again!

Great times at the zone as well, good idea Laura!
