WHAT. THE. ?!??!!??!!?!?!?!?
So... Kate and I went to the Arcadia festival tonight to see Junkie XL. Granted, we weren't expecting all that much, being that it was a nerd festival and all, but hey, I play World of Warcraft for 20 hours a week and program video games, so who the am I to talk. Anyways, we got there at around 9:45pm and had the honor of sitting through "generation 8-bit". You know, I won't lie to you, liked their attitude and all, but there's only so many minutes, let alone hours of straight up video game music you can handle before wanting to go ballistic. After a few hours, some bad called the "mini bosses" came on, and I'll give them credit where credit is due for knowing how to play their instruments and not just mixing gameboy muzak bull with some awful beats, but still, going from Megaman 2 to Mario Brothers to Castlevania, is just like, ya whatever.
Anyways, 1am finally rolls around and the long awaited Junkie XL steps up to the stage. Kate, myself, and our two friends weren't really sure what to expect since it was a massive nerd fest and all, but man were we ever ing happy to hear that he busted out into ing OWNAGE set of pure Junkie XL productions and remixes. I'm too hammered atm to give anything close to a setlist, but let's just say I went absolutely insane when he played his collab with Sasha from a few yeears back: "Beauty never fades". But man, . I've never in my 1.5 year tenure here ever been remotely unimpressed with the sort of parties that go on, but . By the time he got on, the 500 people in the venue turned into about 90, and about 20 of us (the 10 that weren't huge ing nerds, and 10 people that ing WORKED there) were actually dancing. CHRIST! It makes me ing SICK that a DJ and producer of his calibre had to be exposed to this sort of bull. Why the would the promoters of this party book someone like him knowing that the party would be filled with unappreciative dickwads? Makes me ing sick to my stomach.
Anyways, Junkie XL ing DELIVERED. He played a ing disgustingly good set of banging prog and techno, with basslines that absolutely ripped the ing CEPSUM apart. When 2am rolled around and he was done, he dropped some speaker-shattering feedbacky type brown noise on the system and walked off the stage, basically giving the promoters a huge " YOU" for booking someone of his massive talent for such a ty crowd. It was pretty hilarious seeing some random lacky employee runing up there a minute later to figure out how to turn the down, in the meantime with myself and Kate screaming begging for more.
ANYWAYS, Junkie XL would ing RAPE Aria, and he ing needs to be booked there and shown how rocking of a ing city this is. For the first time sinec I've moved here I've felt ashamed of our nightlife, and for 's sake, that needs to be rectified ASAP.
Forgive any typos please, I'm ing hammered, but that doesn't change the fact that there's a balance that needs to be ing restored. |

I agree on most point :
+ someone said it was going to be the biggest sausage fest of the year. NO it wasnt. LOT of girls. Not the type, but a lot of cutties.
- the gamers must be dissapointed. i didnt see any new games. didnt see the new xbox and i didnt see the hockey game. the only thing really impressive was the bodypainted girl. good work by the painter and (by her parents)
+ the 8 bits music was good. i liked the show. and the crowd liked it too. it was going to be a good evening. (ok, after 2 hours, i needed bass.)
+ then the minibosses. great. I really enjoyed the Contra's first stage.
- then there is a major movement. HOW CAN YOU LEAVE AN EVENT WHEN JUNKIE XL IS ABOUT TO GET ON STAGE ? IDIOTS.
I counted, and we were 7 on the dance floor. the others were just passing by or getting beer.
+ JUNKIE XL. I was so happy to finally hear the speakers ! the mini set was excellent. i was praying for breezer .. maybe next year at arcadia 2006 (ahahahahahah)
so overall, a good 25$ not the best 25$ i paid for but i dont regret it. the place was great, the sound was better than what I was expecting from an arena. going to the bathroom was an expedition.
JXL: thanks for the set. and sorry about that problem.
promoters: i hope you learned something from that event.
junkiexl > you |

I tried to got him but the promoters didn't want to share him for the night. Too bad because his agent was ready to book him at Aria.
I will get a date for next year. |

Well I had a great time despite the awful crowd.. The band before Junkie XL were great, but I didn't think there'd be mass exodus before his set. I mean come on, I know there were a lot of geeks there, but I thought SOME of them might like electronic music!
We had an awesome time nonetheless, it was like having Junkie XL for our own private party, except the stupid bouncers wouldn't let us go up and request anything, which pissed me off. But I do feel bad he had to go through that, when he's such an amazing producer and DJ, to get such a ty crowd. It would have at least redeemed Montreal in his eyes to have played at Aria afterwards, cause there would have definitely been a huge crowd for that! Pretty stupid that the Arcadia promoters wouldn't let him play at another venue after theirs was over. That disappoints me, but at least you tried!
And hey Mans_wp_, my friends and I were the 2 couples dancing like crazy in the middle (brown sweatshirt and jeans, girl with the I love nerds tshirt haha). I'm guessing you could pick us out from a crowd of 10....... =( |
