Since I have recently allocated some funds for a new production workstation, I've decided to drop some well earned money on a nifty Mac machine. Now, since I'm not too completely in the know with Macs (I've been a Windows user all my life), I don't really know what's a good fit for production and what's not. The 2.1 GHz iMac G5 looks particularly appetizing, and I've heard good things on the street, but will it really hold up?

fill it with pleanty of ram and you'll be good to go :)

i really like the powermacs, if you can stretch your budget to cover one of those they are awesome production machines!!

wise decision!

Well I don't really like the iMac G5, I have used a couple of those and they are just not very good (that's just my opinion) if I were you, I'd probably go with the PowerMac G5, especially since you have the $$$$

You don't need to spend lots of money if you are just becoming a producer, the G5s are very powerful machines hence if you are just learing how to produce a G5 will be a wasting your money.

G5s- very powerful machines + very expensive
G4 PowerMac- One of the best computers ever made, it's very easy to install new hardware + they are not expensive
G4 PowerBook- Better than the Powermacs, however they could be quite expensive
Mac Mini- Cheap - they great computers overall however it's really really really hard to install any piece of hardware to it, if you are getting one, make sure it comes fully loaded (max HD+RAM)

Hope it helps

dude how is a powerbook mac better than a g5? size and portability yes... But the performance/cost ratio sucks..

A g5imac is a great computer and if you have 1 or 2 hardware synths i think its all anyone really needs w/ logics freeze an all..

We have a 20" iMac G5 at work and I don't like it that much. With all the claims that the G5 processor is blisteringly fast, our iMac feels slow and clunky as the old G4 "dalek". I also don't like the screen or the DVD drive either...definitely go with the tower instead :)

I purchased an imac g5 for producing with 1.5 gig ram 2ghz machine.. As far as having enough power for logic pro 7 its more than enough. I have also found it very stable running with a personus firebox:

this is a great box for music excellent rating everywhere i looked.
and an acces virus a hooked up to it its flawless.

HOWEVER:
I dont like the fan noise of the imac G5 computers you will find that they constantly rev the fan speed up and down and are quite whiny especially if you are giving them a bit of a floggign with audio apps.
By many these fans are quiet, however for a studio environemt i find then annoying and you cant hide the imac under the table its in your face. If you can afford the powermac g5 go for it you really cannot go wrong with them.

dont mistake me but the imac g5 is more than capable for what you want to do. and there is now a revision C version of the imac g5 with the isight built in, I know that teh fan system has ben redesigned inside these machines because of complaits on apple discussions.

got to:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/

search for: imac g5 noise

Just so you know what your in for.

ALSO:

Mac MINI with 1 gig of ram and a firewire external harddrive will be a capable audio machine. and able to do full productions if you are patient with it, provided you are using Logic as logic takes full advnactage of the G4 processor.

remember great productions have been done by many on G3's when they were all that were available.

Hope this helps.
