Review: PAUL VAN DYK @ Roxy, NYC (pg. 5)

It was great to meet some of the New York partiers this weekend!

Roxy was a great club, sort of like a different New York style kool haus.
Lots of space, even when it got busy it wasn't too packed. It was great to be able to get so close to the dj, you could see everything he was doing.
PVD was really getting into it too!I 've never seen him smile that much, especially when he played For an Angel, which was the highlight of the night for me.
It has always been on my list of things that I have to see, nothing better than PVD spinning his own masterpiece!

Thanks to Fran for putting us up, and Laura for driving!
Great trip!

One thing I forgot to mention for sure. When I saw PvD at the Guv 2 summer's ago he kinda just stood there like a cave man! Haha...I kept telling Josh how happy I was to see Paul really getting into the set..the smile on his face, the fist pounds, dancing...it was awesome :)

that seems to be common from my experiences seeing him a few times in NYC. He used to have a residency at Twilo back a few years ago so it must feel kinda like playing for a home town crowd still when he's in town.

I did! Definatly not at my 100% on Saturday night...but I stayed 'til the end, and managed to bust of a move for most of the night!

OK. So now that I'm rested and more articulate here's how the night was...

Got in early after figuring out guestlist and tickets. (Thanks again Dave.) Jerry Bonham was spinning (who looks a lot like PVD - creepy!!). Didn't recognize many of the tracks though - more techier. PVD came in to set up his notebooks (a la Final Scratch) around midnight.

Despite previous comments about him needing to "pick it up" :p (and my obvious bias), I thought it was one of the best live trance sets I have ever heard. I was telling a bunch of people last night that any no-name DJ could have picked up that tracklist and it still would have been an amazing party. I will agree that it was awesome to see him getting into his set, dancing and smiling at the crowd. (Much more visible this time than Central Park :)) Not to mention a 7 hour set! :D

Roxy is beautiful. The screens beside the booth made for an awesome visual experience. I'd say my only complaint of the night was the 45 minute wait for the bathroom. That's a little much.

ME EITHER!

Anyway...as for my review:
I started with a 4 hour train ride to Toronto...then hopped on a 45min bus ride back to Hamilton (after Josh picked me up from the train station and we met with Spitty and Chris). Laura picked us up from the bus station and we began our trek to New York at about 1:15 in the morning. Got there around 9:30 - thanks everyone that gave us directions!

We got to Fran's, and unloaded our bags. He had some work to do, so we decided to go exploring. We walked like 50 miles or something...but it didn't actually seem that long. We saw a bunch of sights...took tons of pictures - which will all be up soon! And just had a great time exploring the city.

Afterwards we relaxed for a bit, before it was time to start the partying! Yankeebaby met up with us (great to see you again baby!), as well as Your Mother (who is actually a native of Windsor!) and his gf. We headed over to Roxy, and after a bit of confusion with the tickets we managed to get in alright.

The club itself was awesome. It was pretty big and had a really nice set up. I also liked how you could be like 10 feet away from the DJ...if that! There were 3 big video screens on each side of the booth, and if you wanted to hang out behind them and dance you literally could just walk up and shake the DJs hand. Not to mention, there was so much room all around the front! Nada you would have been SO happy! Okay...well maybe not RIGHT in the front. But from where I was dancing all night, I was pretty close, and I didn't have too many problems with people getting in my way.

As for tunes...many of them have already been mentioned. Lyteo & Summer dream were definatly two of my favorites. Say Hello - I told Laura she had to take a video of me and Spitty dancing for you Nada. She told me that he probably wouldn't play it...and sure enough he did! I think he did it purposely for you :) I can't wait to show you the video. And yes, as Kelly said...we represented you quite well...a lot of "this is for Nada"'s!

One thing I didn't like though...Josh and I recall there being a couple weak spots in his set. For the most part it was great, but there were two times where we just looked at each other and were like "c'mon paul...pick it up a bit" and sure enough he did and we danced away saying "now THAT'S more like it! That's the paul I've come to know and love!"

It was great to meet a lot of you NYC TAs...dirtydave (we had a nice talk about how awesome the edm scene was haha), photoaddict, your mother, pvdobsession, verndog, colibri, avikonen (of course)...and I'm sure there were others! Hope to see some of you guys soon!

Thanks again to Fran for his genourous hospitality...to Laura for making me go and spotting me all that money...and to all the TAs for making it an awesome trip! One of the best decisions I've ever made!

P.S. Pics and vids soon

Great review, babe. Glad to hear that you had a blast! Can't wait to see the pics and vids!
