Fifth Third Bank is a piece of shït

Several years ago, I had a savings account at Fifth Third Bank. I overdrew my savings account, and received the appropriate penalty. After I stopped the account, I paid the penalty, and closed my account there. I paid the penalty and balance before my account was sent to collection. However, because of the ignorance of Fifth Third Bank employees, my account was referred to a collection agency.
I was not aware that the agency has received a bill of collection from the bank, and I never saw a letter from them. Finally, I happened to be at my parents house and took a call from them, almost a year after the fact. They told me I owed the money, to which I basically told them to go themselves because I had bills of payment. I faxed them all the paper work, and assumed the whole ordeal was closed.
Another year went by and I received a bill of collection from the same agency. I called them, again furious and faxed them the paper work a second time. I was assured that the matter was finalized by an employee and even preformed a credit report check to make sure that everythjing was clean. It was.
Today my dad called me to tell me that I received a letter of collection from a new agency for the same amount, account and ocassion. I am nothing short of livid. They are screwing up my otherwise perfect credit, and possibly hindering my attempts to get a job, apartment, ot anything else where a credit check is necessary.
Does anyone think I should get a lawyer? I'm tempted to take the easy way out again and call them to fax them the matertial, but after this whole mess, I'm not sure that would be wise. As many of your probably know, I'm trying hard to get a job right now, and most of them, especially the university jobs, are probably going to run a credit check. I'm worried that this new collection will screw my chances at a new job. I still have all the paper work showing the account was paid in full and other receipts, including the closing of my account. I'd love for this to be over, but I'm almost tempted to file suit aginst this company, the old agency, and the bank.
All I have to say right now is Fifth Third is a piece of company with a severe lack of organization and a greedy propencity to try to profit off of trying to screw the credit ratings of people who close accounts with their bank. I'm extremely angry. |

Well, it's official. Today, I was denied a job, at a bank oddly enough, because of my poor credit report. The lady I spoke to said I checked out ok, but that my outstanding payment on my credit report was grounds enough to deny me employment. As I'm sure many of you know, if you owe money, many places will not hire you because past employees in similar situations over a broad range of jobs have stolen money and goods to satisfy their credit needs.
I explained the situation to the HR lady, even showing her receipts from the bank and all the corrspondence from both credit beaureaus, but she said all that stuff means nothing and that the best I could do would be to re apply in 6 months. I also talked to the credit agency who told me that the bank was the one responsible for removing the errant report which is total bull . I called them out, but they told me that they would do nothing without the paper work from the bank. I'm calling the bank tomorrow to complain and I'm borderline calling an attorney. I think Im going to send copies of the receipts via registered mail first to see what happens, along with a CC: to the State Attorney General.
This missed job reflects a 28% increase in wages, which is a big jump for me, looking for my first "real" job out of school. To say I am pissed is, of course, an understatement. |
