External Hard Drives

As it seems external storage is getting cheaper by the hour I think it's time I invest in an external hard drive so I was just wanted to know what are you using and your opions of it.

I'am thinking of getting a maxtor 2 300gb but I don't know if theres any benfit of connecting it via firewire or usb2.0 ( other than my firewire ports are doing nothing )

While were on the subject I just thought will an external harddrive be able to run large vst's or can that only be done from internal drives?

Harddisks don't run VST's , you install the VST's ON them , then your CPU & Memory load the VST .DLL from the HDD and that's it ...

So can it run VST's ? : NO , but neither does an internal HDD

Canyou install VST's on it ? : Yep , since this will not require a fast reacting connection.

usb transfer rate is fast for a few seconds and then gets slower, but firewire stays at the same fast transfer rate, so use firewire port

an external drive is good for copying your sample cd's etc on

even usb 2.0?

In theory, USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire, but firewire has a more consistent data flow. IMO it's more reliable.... But both of my external hard disk closures messed up my hard drives, I can't say that I'm a big fan of external HDD's (and that's why I have 3 internal disks :p ) . Don't just buy the cheapest thing you can find, make sure it's reliable
