Premise:
A young boy in the age of steam powered engines is caught in dilemas between keeping his family together and the progression of technology for the world.
i really looked forward to this movie ever since i heard about it A LONG time ago when i was reading an anime magazine. I never saw the initial american screening, which was in san diego where i lived. then i forgot about it.
couple of months ago i went to walmart and i saw they were selling AppleSeed and Steamboy. Once again, i didn't pick it up. However, i saw a used copy and made sure to make the purchase. I went to the park, sat in the grass and watched.
very pleasant movie. supposedly, it was 10 years in the making, made from the mind behind Akira and the most expensive animated film outside of america. It starts out really fast, and then slows down A LOT to express the main themes of the film. I mean, it slows down A ING LOT.
They talk a lot about how technology is used for progression of the human race....or to kill faster...or live longer...etc etc etc.
The animation is really beautiful and the music, OMG, SO AWESOME-DUM. As soon as i got the jist of the rhythems, i was humming along with the beautiful melodies.
it's been a long time since i've sat down and enjoyed a family film. there was not a lot of blood, no language and no sex. hell, i don't even think there was a love story.

one of my band members somehow talked me into watching Akira with him one night a couple years ago.

| i watched Akira 5 times before understanding what was going on. in fact, the movie itself never taught me anything. it seems u have to have the actual box and read the back of it to get the backstory. |

I think this is the first positive post by djslain that I've seen.
Not sure if it's true or not, as I can't find verification, but I've heard the Japaneese version is 6 hours long and makes much more sense. After all, the original manga series added up to over 2000 pages.
Hmm, I'm gonna have to check out this film you talk about. |

steamboy:
animation was great and i loved the english voice actors :) they obviously put a lot of effort in. definately one to watch again.
akira:
one of the first anime i got. very confusing at first, luckily if you read the manga it fleshes out a lot of the side storys you're supposed to understand in the space of a minute or so in the movie. |

| I thought Steamboy was great, one of the better films i've seen in a while. I liked it alot better than Spirited Away too. |

akira = most confusing ever the first time you watch it.

steamboy is ok.. akira is confusing... spirited away is for kids
ghost in the shell all the way. |

| Yeah Ghost in the Shell is great, the sequel especially. Akira is confusing, i think it depends on which version you watch, the newer release has better translated subtitles (so you might only have to watch it 3 times to understand wtf is goin on). |
